A look at Andres Eloy Blanco Square (Eng/Esp)

The mention of Andres Eloy Blanco in Venezuela refers to the country's most renowned popular poet and an illustrious symbol of the city of Cumana. His humanistic contribution, both in literature and in the political sphere, earned him a place in contemporary history and, of course, opened the doors for other poets from Sucre, including Cruz Salmerón Acosta and Jose Antonio Ramos Sucre, so that their works could also be admired.

There is a square in the city named after Andres Eloy Blanco, located near the Antonio Jose de Sucre high school and the Cathedral of Cumana. It is a small but cozy central space where people often gather to talk and enjoy some healthy recreation. Some older adults even sit down to play chess or parqués, which is very similar to ludo and can be played by up to four players.

It is currently undergoing renovation, with the municipality restoring the green areas of this site. The vegetation planted there consists of various large trees and the famous fuchsia trinitarias, which are currently the only flowers in the area. There are few of them, which is why they can be seen from a distance. The roots of large trees, which are no longer there, lifted the ground, so in addition to repairing the damage, pruning and replanting were carried out, an initiative that can be seen in the photographs.

Looking a little deeper into the vegetation, I could make out the tree known as palo mulato, which is characterized by its reddish bark. I also found the Nim or Neem tree, one of the trees that provides the most shade, given its wide canopy. I also spotted some palm trees, which are very resistant to the sun, although they look a little dry due to the lack of water in the city. The plant known as mother-in-law's tongue and agave are also present in this square, occupying prime locations in the gardens.

Although less frequently than in Plaza Bolívar and Plaza Pichincha, given their size, there are some dogs and cats, and birds can be seen flying across the vast sky to move from one place to another. Personally, I believe that this place should be better cared for because the ground looks arid, which is understandable given the water supply problems in Cumaná. Usually, staff assigned to the Sucre state government water these gardens with water from Plaza Bolívar.

I also believe that this plaza needs elements that refer to the poet, as both his identification and his bust were vandalized, leaving the space empty. In contrast, at the birthplace of Andrds Eloy Blanco, located in front of Bolivar Square, there is a statue of the poet sitting on a bench, which is very popular with passersby and visitors for taking photographs.

Both squares are very close, just one block apart, so it is somewhat concerning that beyond planting shrubs and ornamental plants, nothing else is being done to honor an illustrious son of this land. I suppose that since he is not a military hero, he is being left in the background when it comes to this type of recognition.

Without a doubt, walking around the city is one of my favorite hobbies. Every day I notice more details and enjoy connecting with nature to relax. When I take a walk, I do so from a different perspective, and sometimes, without meaning to, different reflections on life, its circumstances, and the complexity of human beings come to me.

La mención de Andrés Eloy Blanco en Venezuela refiere al poeta popular más reconocido del país y un símbolo ilustre de la ciudad de Cumaná. El aporte humanístico, tanto en las letras como en el ámbito político, le ganó un lugar en la historia contemporánea y, por supuesto, abrió las puertas a otros poetas sucrenses, entre ellos Cruz Salmerón Acosta y José Antonio Ramos Sucre, para que sus obras también fueran admiradas.

En la ciudad existe una plaza que lleva el nombre Andrés Eloy Blanco, la cual se ubica cerca del liceo Antonio José de Sucre y de la Catedral de Cumaná, es un espacio céntrico, pequeño pero acogedor donde las personas se suelen reunir para hablar y pasar un rato de sano esparcimiento. Incluso, algunos adultos mayores se sientan a jugar ajedrez o parqués, el cual es muy parecido al ludo y por ello pueden participar hasta cuatro jugadores.

Actualmente se encuentra en remodelación, la municipalidad está rescatando las áreas verdes de este lugar, la vegetación allí sembrada se caracteriza por diferentes árboles de gran tamaño y las célebres trinitarias fucsias que, hasta ahora, son las únicas flores del lugar, son pocas y por ello se logran distinguir en la distancia. Las raíces de grandes árboles, que ya no están, levantaron el piso, por tal razón, además de reparar los daños, se realizó una poda y nueva siembra, iniciativa que se aprecia en las fotografías.

Profundizando un poco más en la vegetación, pude distinguir al árbol conocido como palo mulato, el cual se caracteriza por su corteza rojiza. También encontré al Nim o Neem, uno de los que ofrece más sombra, dado que posee una copa amplia. De igual manera divisé algunas palmas, las cuales son muy resistentes al sol, aunque lucen un poco secas por la carencia de agua en la ciudad. La planta conocida como lengua de suegra y el agave también hacen acto de presencia en esta plaza, ocupando lugares preferenciales en los jardínes.

Aunque con menos frecuencia que en la Plaza Bolívar y la Plaza Pichincha, dadas las dimensiones de las mismas, circulan algunos perros, gatos y se notan aves sobrevolando en la inmensidad del cielo para trasladarse de un lugar a otro. En lo personal considero que debería cuidarse más este lugar porque la tierra luce árida, los que es factible debido a los problemas del suministro de agua en Cumaná. Por lo regular, personal adscrito a la gobernación del estado Sucre riegan estos jardínes con agua proveniente de la plaza Bolívar.

Creo también que esta plaza requiere de elementos que refieran al poeta, tanto su identificación como su busto fueron vandalizados, quedando el espacio vacío. En contraste, en la Casa Natal de Andrés Eloy Blanco, ubicada frente a la plaza Bolívar, se observa una estatua del poeta sentada en un banco, la cual es muy solicitada por los transeúntes y visitantes para tomar fotografías.

Ambas plazas están muy cerca, a una cuadra de distancia, por ello resulta un tanto preocupante que más allá de la siembra de arbustos y plantas ornamentales, no se haga algo más en lo que respecta a enaltecer a un hijo ilustre de esta tierra. Supongo que al no representar a un héroe militar se le deje en un segundo plano en lo que respecta a este tipo de atenciones.

Sin duda, caminar por la ciudad es una de mis aficiones favoritas, cada día me fijo más en los detalles y disfruto conectar con la naturaleza para relajarme. Al realizar un recorrido, lo hago desde un enfoque distinto y, a vece, sin querer vienen a mí diferentes reflexiones sobre la vida, sus circunstancias y la complejidad del ser humano.
