The spread of covid-19 is no longer news to anyone existing on earth, there have been several reported cases of the virus the good side is that people are recovering but the bad side also is that, people are dying as a result of the virus. Country presidents have taken actions that will help protect their citizens from getting infected by the virus, but my dear country has taken a different approach to address this issue of pandemic.
Nigeria seem to have handled coronavirus case differently from the rest of the world (that is what we are good at doing). Nigeria is a country where our politicians and wealthy business send their children abroad to receive education and health care, this implies that the educational system and health care system put in the country cannot be used by our leaders, it should be for only the common man while they fly themselves and their family members out of the country to get good health care and education.
When the case of coronavirus started and different countries were closing up borders, my dear country leaders had their children, friends and relatives out of the country who had to come back home, so the border was left opened until every of their friends and relatives came in and at that time, coronavirus has become a friend to the state.
A complete lockdown was initiated for weeks and financial institutions, religious bodies and some wealthy business men and women began to support the government with funds to support the economy and its citizens during the lockdown period, but as usual citizens were not supported with anything and what we heard after some weeks was that all the billions of Naira supposed to be used to support citizens has been exhausted, when the senate asked for the document to show proof of support, two official buildings immediately caught fire in the state capital (my country is filled with so much drama).
Eventually even while the number of those with the virus continued to spread, our government relaxed lockdown and so many people are back on the street to continue the struggle to make a daily living, but schools, religious bodies and event gathering has not been permitted to open yet. For someone like me whose business is closely related to student’s presence, I still have to stay at home and expect that everything returns to normal soon.
The effect of covid-19 on small business owners.
For small business owners like me who still have to keep our doors closed, the after effect of this pandemic still looks very scary. I have some goods on shelf whose date continues to read and might get expired before there is a final relieve of lockdown.
So many business owners in my country, depend on debt in order to run their businesses, some debtors are already asking for loan repayment and I am sure there will be no support whatsoever from the government for small business owners.
Expired goods will have to get discarded, loans will have to be repaid and I do not know if some small scale businesses will be able to stand the test of time.
Dear friends, this is the current situation of things in my country and we do not even know what will happen the next minute, I will like to know if your government is handling the case differently. Thanks for reading, I am
