EGGSTA debuted about a couple of months ago with the release of her slickly produced collaboration with pop-heavyweight Lee Cole -“BAE”. The South African born, Netherlands-hailing EDM artist has wasted no time in getting her foot in the door, with the track hitting charts across the country. And, honestly, if “BAE” hasn’t drifted across your radar by now, I’ll be surprised.
Now, flexing her versatility and stripping swiftly back from her EDM proclivities, she’s just dropped an acoustic rendition of the track, along with a slick, simple video. It turns the vibrant electro anthem into a soppy love song. Both of which work, just take your pick.
I never knew what “bae” stood for (apparently it’s “before anyone else” and here I was thinking someone had just left a “b” out of “babe”), and it’s actually a lot more wholesome than I thought. Cheesy lyricism meets gorgeous, pitching falsettos and warm, honeyed mid-tones and it’s in their vocalism that the song shines.
Where the original was bolstered by a flexible, summery EDM beat, this version pivots the spotlight onto EGGSTA’s vocal prowess. The video keeps things just as simple – EGGSTA and Lee Cole reel out the track against a post-modern water feature backdrop. And where it errs on the basis of banality, it’s here to prove, ahead of an imminent EP drop, that EGGSTA is here with the sole intention of making waves.
