I love jazz and I also love latin music. If you also like either or both, it's likely that you've heard about the Buena Vista Social club project.
The Buena Vista Social club was produced by American guitarist Ry Cooper and feature an ensemble of Cuban musicians from pre-revolutionary Cuba.
The project resulted in an album and a film (and I really recommend both) and also cast a new light on Cuban and Latin music.
Most of the musicians were already very old in 1996 - when the project was recorded - and have passed away, but their renewed importance made sure that their legacy will live on for years to come.
Chan chan
Chan chan is regarded as the signature tune of Buena Vista Social Club and is also my favourite track from the whole album.
Dos Gardenias
This one has a lot of jazz to it (just listen to that piano!) but it's still true to its Latin roots. Another masterpiece!
Quizás, Quizás
This is one of the most famous tracks in the album. It was recorded multiple times, in different languages even. It's a great tune, like every single one in the album!
I believe the full documentary is easy to find and I really, really recommend you watch it if you like jazz and/or latin music. Not only because the music is great but also the photography is fantastic and it's really well produced. Definitely a treasure of musical history!
I hope you enjoy it and I'll see you next Monday!
