Hello guys! I'm writing this post on March 8th, which is the International Women's Day.
I know that this day represents much more than a music post ever will, but still, I'd like to honor some women who made and still make a huge impact in an industry that's mostly run by men.
This is list is not in any way exhaustive and I could spend a lifetime writing about the amazing contributions women have made to music but I'll try to keep it short. I hope you enjoy it!
Sister Roseta Tharpe
Some will say that Evils is the king of rock n' roll, others will claim it's actually CHuck Berry but the true ruler of rock n' roll is actually a queen and her name is Sister Rosetha Tharpe! Just take a look at what this lady could do with a guitar in her hands!
The Runaways
The Runaways was an all female american band formed in the 70's. They had a short career but it was enough for them to rock stages in America, Europe and even Japan. Also, the band revealed some talents that would go on to become big rock starts, most notably Joan Jett and Lita Ford.
Nita Strauss
Another rock star who was revealed in an all female band, Nita Strauss, or Hurricane Nita, became famous for being one of the guitarists in the Iron Maidens, a tribute band formed by female musicians only. I guess it goes without saying which band they covered :P
Nita Strauss then moved on to play with the great Alice Cooper and also launched a very successful career as a solo artist. She is insanely good with a guitar!
Janis Joplin
She had a short career and, unfortunately, a short life but you can recognize her piercing voice anywhere. Janis sang with all her heart and soul and will always be a huge influence for musicians for many years to come!
Amy Whinehouse
Another victim of the so-called "27 club", Amy also had a short but meteoric career. I was fortunate to see her live once and it was a singular experience. The way she sang, the way she moved, the quality of the band and her unique voice, and the way she gave herself to the music would put everyone in a trance.
That's it for now, people! Like I said, there are many more that deserve to be in this list but this will do for now. I hope you have enjoyed it!
