The Red Hot Chilli Peppers were formed in Los Angeles California in 1983 and are considered one of the greatest rock bands of all times. With a very creative set of musicians and heavy punk and funk influences, the band's unique sounds conquered their audience all over the world.
They have released 11 studio albums and are still very much active. With John Frusciante's recent return to the band, fans can expect more stuff coming in the future.
RHCP was a big part of my life growing up and I set myself the very difficult task to select a few of their songs to feature in this week's MusicMonday post. I hope you enjoy them.
Give it Away (from the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik)
It's very hard to choose a song from this album, as it produced many hit singles for the band. I like Give it Away because you can really hear that funk influence I was talking about in the intro of this post. That awesome bass line really sets the tone for the song. No wonder Flea is considered one of the world's greatest rock bassists.
Californication (from the album Californication)
Did I say it was hard to choose a song from Blood Sugar Sex Magik? Well, when it comes to Californication it's nearly impossible! This is the band's most famous album and it's loaded with some of the band's greatest hits. It definitely deserves a post of its own in the future. I decided to choose the song that gives the name to the album because it's truly a masterpiece: it has great lyrics, a killer instrumental composition and that iconic music video. You can't go wrong with Californication.
Can't Stop (from the album By the Way)
Keeping up with the success of the Californication album was not an easy task but By the Way was well received by the audience. I chose Can't Stop because I really like the changes in dynamics that happen throughout the song. Again, Flea's funky bassline and tone set the mood here. Also, excellent backing vocal work by the always amazing John Frusciante.
Snow (from the album Stadium Arcadium)
This is one of my favorite songs by the band. I'm an absolute Frusciante fan and the guitar work in this song is just amazing. I guess it's not as "flashy" as some of his other songs but that main lick is really intricate and you can't tell how great of a musician is John just by dissecting that part.
Soul to Squeeze (from the album Greatest Hits)
This is my favorite song by RHCP. I don't even know how to explain why but I just love it. That intro, the lyrics, the state of mind that takes over me whenever I listen to it. It's a very personal experience that's impossible to put down in words but I decided to share it anyway.
And those were my 5 picks for this week's MusicMonday. It was not an easy task and many great songs by this great band were left out so it's up to you guys to complete the list:
