A while ago I was asked by an acquaintance of mine if I wanted to fill in for his band for a performance. He's an amazing guitar player and I like him so I immediately said without a doubt, of course. But at that time I didn't know at all what that band played. He sent me a playlist from Spotify called NYB, which was the name of the band and it stood for Not Your Business, lol.
I must say, when I played the playlist in the car I was quite impressed, more the funk rock with bands where the bass player also has an important role... So I was a bit intimidated. ;) But I thought the choice of music was really brilliant and I heard songs that I didn't know before but thought it was really amazing.
In this post a few songs they play that I really love.

War paint, Ritchie Kotzen. I knew Ritchie Kotzen by name but not really his music. This song is now one of my favorites. This song has it all, power, musicality, amazing vocals and such super basslines. I didn't know the bass player either, but what a beast.
A completely different genre is this song, Slither by Velvet Revolver. But I also think this is a really crazy song. Balls, fat guitar riffs and amazing vocals.

Philip Sayce, I think it's a bit of a cross between Steve Ray and John Mayer. What an energy and crazy style of play. When I heard "love is a powerfull thing" I thought I was dealing with a musician of at least 55 years old. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Paulo Mendonça, with "Just in case"
I heard this song for the first time in NYB's playlist, before that I didn't know it yet. I was immediately impressed by the funk and swing in the song. My representation of the bass line and how the bass player is swinging is exactly like in this video.
Gov't Mule, Beautifully broken. I recognized the first lines, but from another song When the Doves Cry by prince. This is a very relaxed song. But the devil is in the details, the laid back timing is quite tricky.
All in all, enough new music to rehearse. That makes it fun, learning new things....
Have a great night,
Take care,
Peter
