Quick question... does anyone here actually use Amazon Prime?
I know there are a few perks with using it, but one of the bigger ones is the free next day delivery
And I honestly can't work out why people pay to use it, because whenever I use the cheapo slow delivery option, it is always delivered super quickly. Case in point, I ordered the above items on Saturday evening. I had the option of paying prime, paying for a special next day delivery, or the free option. The free delivery still said within 5 days, but it wasn't urgent so that was fine.
You can imaging my surprise, when the amazon delivery turned up at lunchtime today, less than 48 hours since I clicked the payment button.
Actually too efficient for their own good, why would you pay for express delivery when it comes this quickly...?
Anyway... fortunately I was at home to receive the parcel, which included the start of my xmas shopping (boo, hiss) along with the supplements above. I don't really use supplements as I figure a lot of them to be gimmicks (and often over priced to boot).
I have however been having protein shakes on and off for the past couple of years. I know most people would associate it with lifting weights in the gym etc, but I use it as a very easy way to increase my protein intake without having increase the meat I consume. I'm not veggie or vegan by the way, I just don't need to eat meat with every meal.
Its also helps with the muscle recovery and general maintenance of the body. An unexpected bonus of increasing protein is increased satiety levels, which means I feel fuller for longer, and less likely to snack on calorie dense foods (such biscuits, my nemesis). So in a roundabout way I am better able to control my calorie intake
The last pack I owned was Vanilla flavored, which became very boring very quickly, so for the new one I've gone back to chocolate. I've just tried it now, and it seems ok (there is a slightly odd aftertaste, but I find all of these products do). I've also picked up some more Creatine, which is again useful in increase exercise performance and muscle growth (source).
The final pack is a new one for me - Electrolytes. When we sweat we don't just lose water, we lose minerals as well such as Salt and potassium (source). These minerals are linked to various functions of the body, and if there is an imbalance then there are a number of side effects.
The one I'm focusing on is muscle cramps/twinges which I often get at the end of a long run. Its only recently that I've realised that a potential cause of that is low Sodium (salt) levels. I sweat a lot while exercising, and I can actually feel the salt on my face once the sweat had dried. I was just looking for salt tablets, but these cover a few of the other minerals lost during sweating. I'll be looking to supplement these before (and maybe after) longer training sessions. There is also a chance they will help with muscle performance too... especially near the end of the session.
I guess it'll be a few weeks until I can tell if the Electrolyte tablets will make a difference... but anyway, enough waffling about the supplements.
As mentioned earlier, I was working from home today, and that meant once again I could log off and go for a run just after 4pm. A good thing really as with the clocks going back 1 hour at the weekend, it is already starting to get dark by 4pm. There has been plenty of rain around today, so I decided just to stick to the village as I knew there would be no closed paths/roads to try to get past.
It was to be 2 gentle loops around the village for approximately 11km, and it was done surprisingly quickly considering I was aiming an easy Zone 2 pace. Felt really good out there this evening, and I think I can say that the consistent training is definitely paying off :-)
Tomorrow will be a rest day, along with a day in the office... Wednesday will be a day at home, and then there will be a longer in the evening, weather permitting!

About the Athlete: Living in the UK, I am an intermittent Runner, but always striving for more consistency. When I'm not training I can be found photographing insects or listening to really loud angry music (which is the best type of music obviously!)
