Description from Strava: It was hard going out there today
Dan, you've just finished running 30km!
Yes I know, I know... 30km is quite a long way. Took me just over 3 hours to complete it too.
What I mean is; I felt really tired and sore and achy afterwards. For some perspective, the last 2 weeks I completed 25km each time, and comparatively much better than I did today.
And for the 5 weeks prior to those 2 weeks, I have completed 22km on each weekend run. And they were fine.
Evidently I have increased the distance too much this time around, and need to still build up a base to complete the 30km effectively.
I have also increased my weekly mileage significantly in recent weeks
To be fair, I also didn't start todays run very well. I had planned to be awake at 8am, in order to go running at around 9am. I went to bed sharp last night for this reason, and seemed to sleep ok. However, when my alarm went off at 8, I felt so tired still. I turned over and went back to sleep, and eventually woke up again at midday.
Not what I had planned
I had a quick drink and a Twix and then set off. The route was again the standard half marathon route except as I was planning to go further today. This meant I added in a loop at the top of town which meant going round Greetwell Road and Wragby Road a second time. When I arrived back in the village I was sitting at 26km, so added a quick loop around the village to finish the run on 30km.
Usually when I finish these long runs, I feel a bit tired and creaky, but today when I stopped the watch and saved the Strava run, I felt flippin' awful. Not just the tired legs, but headaches and some dizziness too.
I strongly suspect the biggest issue was the lack of food or water so far today. I went to bed at 11pm last night and in the 16 hours between then and completing the run I had managed half a glass of water and 2 chocolate biscuits. Probably not the best way to prepare for a 3 hour run as I'm sure you will agree. After a hot shower, and some dinner, and lots of water... I'm now starting to feel back to normal again.
Note to self - next time I attempt this distance (and further) I need to make sure I am actually prepared for it.
I think I also need to look into carrying something with me on these long runs in future, whether that's just fluids or some food as well. I think I got away with it today as I stopped running at the right time (before the dehydration got any worse), and the weather was cool and cloudy. I wouldn't have been able to manage this in the summer heat.
Lots of lessons to be learnt from this one and plenty of research required too, I really don't want to feel like that again!
