One Skill That Has Blessed Me So Much
There was an era in Nigeria when Agriculture was the deal of the day, if you were not a farmer, you are considered as a poor man who has no direction in life. Gradually, a time came when if you didn't go to school it looked like that was the end for you. You are considered as a nonentity, someone without a future and hope in life. Education gradually became like everything because of the value placed on it.
Some of our parents went the extra mile to ensure that we get educated, not for the knowledge but for the belief that those who go to school have higher chances of being successful in life. Actually, it worked in their days, but time changes.
In our day, school is also very good, but it's not a guarantee for success anymore. If all that you have to succeed in life now is just education, then I fear greatly for you because you might be waiting for so long and not end up being lucky like you thought.
The number of graduates on the ground without a job is so scary. There are only a few opportunities with many qualified people chasing them. The competition is too high. I didn't even talk about bribery and Godfatherism. Meanwhile, there are still people going to school with the hope that someday they will get a very nice government job.
Many have gone to school with high hopes, totally neglecting to learn good skills that will benefit them financially, and in the end, they get disappointed. The government can't employ everyone, it's a very bitter truth that many of us don't want to hear. Going to school is amazing but going with the mentality that the government is under obligation to give you a job because you went to school is a very terrible idea.
Thank God recently, young people are beginning to understand these things and are gradually looking for other means to empower themselves financially rather than waiting for the government in the name of I went to school.
Down here, parents are already getting wise, they get nice skills for their children to learn even while they are still in primary school so that as they are growing, they will grow with something that can bring food to their table even if they don't get a government job.
I was not privileged to learn a skill while growing up, it was after I graduated from college that life forced me to learn a skill. I applied for many government jobs and none was forthcoming. I had to rethink and the only option left was to get a skill. I tried learning a few skills like tailoring and satellite installation but I couldn't stay due to some reasons.
Along the line, my friend introduced me to Hive and I was like how do I cope? I didn't know anything about writing but he said: "Come you will learn there". As I endured and stayed, gradually, I started learning how to write from other authors, little by little I started catching up and today I am so surprised at the man that I have become. It's not that I am a pro but, it marvels me that I can write articles and stories on my own. It's something I never imagined in my life at all.
Writing has become one skill that has been empowering me financially. On hive through writing, I got to know about cryptocurrency, something I only use to read or watch online. I also got to meet amazing personalities that have affected my life positively. The blessings are enormous, these are only but a few. I am still building my writing skills and hopefully, I'll be better than I used to be.
Well, it will be with pleasure that I'll teach anyone who is ready to learn this skill. All I'll need from the person is just willingness. In the same way, someone empowered me, I would love to empower another.
