In our contemporary world, one of the most important criterias a aside from love that couples are advised to take into consideration is genetic compatibility. Love is Not Enough when you want to commit entirely to another person for a long time, there are other things to be put in place especially concerning health condition before one can proceed in that institution.
Although, there are people who choose love over any other thing but it is not advisable medicalally to not check your health status. The issue of genetic compatibility is very important but people overlook this topic and other health related issues before getting married.
In my country Nigeria, we are victims of these situation where couples go into a relationship or marriage without checking their genetic status. It is important to check if both of you are okay enough to bear healthy children rather than bringing innocent kids into the world to suffer health complications.
In Africa, sickle cell disease and other hereditary conditions are Common. I watched a movie on YouTube acted by freddie Leonard and Ebube Nwagbo, although it's been a while but I still remember the movie is about a couple who loves themselves so much to the extent that when they solve their genetic compatibility was not a match they still decided to go into the marriage thinking they can over it.
They got married in the church and settled in. At first, everything was going on smoothly they were happy and enjoy the first two years of their marriage. Then they decided to give child bearing a chance, this was when the whole issues started and it was not an easy task but they tried to your best to some extent.
Apparently, when two people's genes are not compatible and they want to have children together there is a 5% tendency or so to give birth to a child that is AS and not SS. In this case, it's is all about probability and chance as both parents can pass on the A gene rather than the 'S' gene and have an AS child, but when the S'is passed on they give birth to 'SS'
So, in this movie, they relied on this medical advice and thought they would scale through but reverse was the case. The lady got pregnant 4 times and the carrier genes were SS, because they do not want any child to suffer because of their love and selfish desires the always abort the fetus.
However, the 5th time broke and shattered her mental health, they became devastated and lived like strangers because the whole issue had taken a toll on them. At the end, they decided to go their separate ways because the love they thought was enough to pull through life had been taken away by reality.
In conclusion, if I imagine myself in the situation of being an AS and my partner is AS, I would definitely cancel the marriage because I would not want my child to suffer for my ignorance and selfish desires.
