These did take me back to memory lane. Back then in school, one of the hottest topics for debate was always, “Who is more important, a doctor or a teacher?” I can vividly remember standing in front of the whole assembly to support or oppose the motion. The truth is, we never really understood things back then, but then it was fun. Now, life has taught us some lessons. Let me say, life has taught me a few lessons, and I now understand that that question is more personal and deeper than all of our arguments back then.
Let's start from here. There was a time I had an issue that forced me to take a time out of school. It was an illness and I battled with it for sometime. So, I am in a position to tell you how important doctors are. Then, aside God, they were the very next people I was looking up to. I see the effort they put into keeping me alive and to make sure I survived that illness. I saw how they applied their knowledge, patience, and all, even when I had wanted to give up on myself. All of these and many more are enough reasons for me to never take for granted how important and vital they are. We can call doctors the thin line between life and death. Because when you are sick and in pain, the money or whatever you have then doesn't matter; you would always be seeking a doctor, for the best health practitioner to attend to you, as your life then is at their mercy.
But then again, who actually teaches these doctors? Who made them? The simple answer is... A teacher. Without teachers, there would be no doctors. I fell in love with doctors and wanted to be one during that time I was sick, but still I can't deny that these doctors, before becoming doctors, had to go through a classroom and get taught by a teacher. They learned how to read and write. It is teachers who plant the seeds that later grow into every profession we see today, including doctors. Everything a doctor does today is with the help of a teacher at one time or another. The fact that they are able to read, write, prescribe drugs, and the like is enough reason to see the effort of a certain profession... Teaching.
So, to the question about who is more important? To tell the truth, both are very important and priceless in their own different way. A doctor can save a life, but a teacher can shape a life. Doctors have the ability to repair broken bodies, but teachers have the ability to mold minds. Personally, I owe my survival to doctors, the same way I also owe the man I have become, who can read, write, think, dream, and even stand to talk and debate, to teachers.
Both of them are important; we can't really say one is more important—they both complement each other. A sick person needs healing before knowledge can matter to him/her. But then, who would even think of becoming a doctor without a teacher that has helped lay the foundation? Without both of them, this life can collapse. But then, if I needed to choose one, I would go for teachers because they are the starting point of every other profession. Everybody, regardless of his/her profession, has at one time or another passed through a teacher who has helped shape him/her. They remain the root from which every other profession grows.
