I will never forget my experience visiting a small village in Ghana. The people were extremely friendly and welcoming, but the dirt road that led into the village revealed a very different reality than the one I had experienced while walking around the village. The dirt road was extremely narrow, poorly maintained, and an obstacle to navigation, as well as an indicator of the obstacles many face when living at such great distances from modernised areas.
The impact of the dirt road on the daily lives of the residents of the village has been immense. Almost all aspects of life have been impacted by the poor road conditions. Residents use the road to take their farm produce to market. Additionally, they rely upon the road to receive essential services. Travelling on the road has become dangerous, especially during the rainy season, which results in the isolation of certain communities from neighbouring towns. In addition to the challenges created during the rain, the lack of paved roads creates difficulty in accessing education, health care, employment, and other vital resources.
Despite the enormous hardships created by the poor condition of the roadways, the residents of the village continue to work diligently, particularly in farming. They arise each day before dawn, tend to their crops, and develop strategies to successfully move their harvests over the poor roadways. The resilience of the residents is truly inspirational but also serves as a reminder of the significant benefits they would experience if they had better roadways.
I believe that the residents of rural villages, including this one in Ghana, deserve to live a higher quality of life. A well-maintained road network would provide the residents of the village with better access to markets, schools, hospitals, job opportunities, and overall economic development. A well-maintained road network would also alleviate the physical strain of travelling on a regular basis and create opportunities for businesses and investors to become involved in the development of the village.
In terms of agriculture, the ability to transport farm products without encountering significant barriers is critical to reducing waste, increasing revenue, and strengthening the local economy. Moreover, improved transportation networks allow rural communities to develop social connections, economic growth, and the opportunity to enjoy many of the things that contribute to a sense of joy and well-being in a person's life.
Experiences such as this serve as a strong reminder of why it is so important to help develop rural areas. Rural development does not have to occur only in urban settings. With the right focus and cooperation, rural villages throughout Ghana could be provided with the necessary infrastructure to allow them to thrive and to create brighter futures for themselves.
