Not a desired outcome for the project but that is the reality of game development. I knew back in 2020 when I started to work on this project that it would be a long, hard, and costly road to walk down. While it was a fun one at times. It’s also something I have to put on hold for time being.
Originally when I started this project the idea was to put in around 10,000 hours to learn how to make a video game and over many years get to some kind of endpoint. At this point with rising inflation, the monthly costs of this project, and the cost of living sky rocking it’s no longer something I can afford to do.
Back in 2021 and early 2022, I made two smaller games. A big part of those smaller games was testing out some things I needed a better understanding of so I could implement them into my bigger project. This led me to a better understanding of other things as well such as distribution and attempt at monetization if possible. Along with a lot more costs than I was expected if I wanted to go a certain route.
Over time many expressed their concerns about how big of a project I was attempting to take on was. While it was not anything earth-shattering in the game development world. For a first-timer without a background in anything other than love for video games it was quite the undertaking.
I also never considered this project to be that massive. It was also never my dream project. I had some insane things I wanted to do long after this project and this project was going to be my entry point and learning opportunity. Along with a way, I was hoping would fund my future endeavors that would not be possible solo.
Going out and paying for education would have been a far more costly option and I would have learned a lot less and done even less with it. So I have no regrets for what I was attempting to do and where I got with it.
I’ll revisit this project next year and hopefully my situation will have improved to a point where I can start things back up. With the way things are looking however I needed to make some tough decisions sooner than later. Since this project is still quite a ways from being done.
I wish everyone the best of luck on the games they are currently developing. While not everything always works out the way you would like in life. That is never an excess to not at least try at first. This is one of those things.
