Shane Matthews had a pretty prolific college career as a quarterback with the University of Florida from 1990-1992. In his three years starting as a Gator, Matthews averaged about 3,100 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns a season. He left Florida with an insane 137.6 QB rating!
Matthews was First-Team All-SEC from 1990-1992, was SEC Player of the Year twice, and a Second-Team All-American once. He helped Florida win an SEC Title in 1991.
He's basically University of Florida royalty and is in their Hall of Fame.
It seems that Matthews wasn't drafted but was signed as a free agent in 1993 by the Bears. He essentially was a backup and often a third string QB all the way until his retirement in 2006.
Matthews did record statistics in 1996, 1999-2002, and 2004. He appeared in 31 total games and started 22 times. He managed to surpass 1,000 passing yards twice during his career. Once in 1999 with the Bills and then in 2002 with Washington. His career high for passing yards was 1,645 in 1999.
Matthews spent time with the Bears, Panthers, Redskins, Bengals, Bills, and the Dolphins. He threw for 4,756 yards and had 31 TDs - 24 INTs. Matthews was 11-11 as a starter.
Matthews has coached high school football since his retirement. Recently though, he's dipped into the pro football and became the head coach of the XFL's Orlando Guardians.
