Howard Griffith is another player I had no clue about but after some research, I realize he had a pretty cool career. He was not a superstar, but perhaps some fans older than myself may remember him. I imagine most Denver Broncos fans remember him quite well.
This is probably the first fullback post I post in this community, and Griffith is a great fullback to start with. Fullbacks are so underrated in my opinion. A fullback is a tough, physical, helpful player that can help an offense's run game thrive by basically being a running back's personal bodyguard. Fullbacks can also be handy with the ball in their hands. Howard Griffith proved he could do all of those things, a true utility player.
Howard Griffith was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the ninth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. That was back when the NFL draft had a ton of rounds, nowadays the draft lasts only seven rounds. Despite being drafted by the Colts he never saw any NFL action until he joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1993.
After two years with the Rams, Griffith was the fullback for the Carolina Panthers for two seasons before joining the Denver Broncos and having his most memorable seasons as a professional.
In Denver, he was a key ingredient for their offense. He was such a powerful lead blocking force that he earned himself the nickname, "The Human Plow". I mean, that's gotta be one of the meanest nicknames you can get as a football player. Ultimately, his great blocking helped lead the Denver Broncos to two CONSECUTIVE Super Bowl Championships in the late 1990's. Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII, the last two Super Bowls that would ever be played in the 90's.
In Super Bowl XXXIII he showed that he can do more than just be a plow, as he scored two rushing touchdowns!!
Considering how much of a utility player Griffith was, and his Championship accomplishments Griffith really had an admirable career. He never saw a snap with the team that drafted him, but found a way to stay in the league and really make his mark in NFL history.
