After two cards about straight up superstars, here's one of a lesser known player in former infielder from the 80's and 90's Mike Gallego.
I have a tremendous soft spot for the Oakland Athletics. The A's were my very first little league team way back in 2003 and I became a fan. I felt like such a boss wearing my first jersey, which was basically just a t-shirt and a cap LOL. I get oddly nostalgic when I see the A's uniform. Great times. Man, getting old sucks in some ways. At least I can ramble about sports on Hive LOL!
My fandom has sort of started to lean towards the Phillies, the hometown team, but I think at this point in my life I could see myself truly enjoying both teams. I have not followed baseball much in recent years, but I have loosely kept track. Matter of fact, I just subbed to the Phillies and A's YouTube channels. Writing about this I figured why not?
But yeah, anyway, Mike Gallego was by no means a superstar but he played a lot of baseball and was a solid infielder. He played in the MLB from 1985-1997 and appeared in 1,111 games, about 70% of those games were played in an A's uniform. He also played for the Yankees and Cardinals.
Gallego won three straight AL Pennants with the Athletics from 1988-1990, and won a World Series with the team in 1989.
In 1990 Gallego led the American League in sacrifice hits with 17. His career high in homeruns was 12 in 1991. He retired in 1997 with 700 career hits and a career batting average of .239.
Since retirement, Gallego has been a coach for the Rockies, A's and Angels.
Pretty sweet learning about a former World Series Champ with the A's!
As a youngster, I had no concept of the internet. Never would have guessed I could look up these players so easily one day. It's like the card is coming to life.
