Our next adventure was to find the St Edwin's Chapel iron cross in Birklands Wood, Nottinghamshire that was put up by the 6th Duke of Portland in 1205. The cross marks where an old chapel used to be. We parked up at the side of the road and followed the footpath into the wood. The footpath is called the Robin Hood Way. As we were in Robin Hood's county it was quite appropriate.
Before we found the cross, we stumbled across some creepy arsed trees.
They looked like some crazy looking stags with antlers in a dark fairy tale.
We carried on down the footpath, and it wasn't long before we found the iron cross, which was much taller than I thought it would be.
I couldn't quite read what the inscription on the stone said as it was quite weathered, but it mentioned King John paying 4 shillings to the hermit of Clipstone who sang in St Edwin's Chapel in Birchwude (Birklands Wood) to pray for his soul.
We noticed the bluebells were finally appearing. In a couple of weeks, we will make a return trip as we've been told it's quite a spectacle in the wood as the floor will be covered in a carpet of purple.
