Another walk around Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire today, only a slightly different route. It turned out to be a wet walk as well as it was pouring down with rain.
Undeterred by the weather we chose one of the walking trails that you can follow to see the giant trees. Sherwood Forest has the largest ancient oaks in Europe.
According to the notice, the legend of the 'Stag Head' tree is that, once upon a time, a great stag watched over the creatures in the forest. When he became too old, he retired to sit in the highest branches of an ancient tree where he looked over his kingdom ..... all true, of course.
You can definitely see the stag's head at the top of the tree.
They have demolished the old Visitor Centre and car park and built a new one in another part of the park. I found it interesting that this area was all fenced off to let nature take it over.
It was a nice flat walk with various routes of different lengths to choose from.
You can't let the bad weather put you off. We ended our walk as usual, having an al fresco coffee on the picnic tables.
