This hilarious comedy was released in 1998 and went became on of the biggest movie successes of the year. Starring Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller and Matt Dillon it was a huge hit making Diaz and Stiller even bigger Hollywood stars. The plot revolved around Mary (Diaz) a successful orthopedic surgeon being pursued by multiple men including Stiller, who know her from High School. Stiller hires a private detective (Dillon) who also falls in love with Mary. Brett Favre even makes a cameo, it's a lot of fun!
If you somehow missed this one, it's worth watching. It really is a funny movie and one of the best of the 1990's! Here's the original theatrical trailer:
Nineties Friday is a fun event where you can share anything from the 1990's, you imagination is the limit. Just use the tag #ninetiesfriday or #fivetunefriday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to who created the event. There is usually some sort of HSBI prize for a lucky participant!
Spongebob Squarepants
The world was introduced to Spongebob in the middle of 1999 and the show has been going strong ever since. Several movies have also been made about the sponge and his underwater friends as well. I never really watched the show until after my son was born and he became a fan. I have to admit, it's a hard show not to like!
Here's part of the first season where Spongebob first meets Plankton trying to steal the precious Krabby Patty formula from Mr. Krabs:
Now for some music from the decade:
The Offspring
The Offspring formed as a band in 1984 in Garden Grove, California. Not too far from where I live here in Orange County. It took them many long years to make into the mainstream music scene, although they had a pretty big following locally in California. In 1994 their album "Smash" changed everything and became a best seller. This song comes off their follow up album entitled Ixnay on the Hombre, this is: "Gone Away"
No Doubt
Forming as a band in 1986 in Anaheim, California (incidentally also close to my home) they picked up a local following in California but struggled to find main stream success. However, in 1995, the album Tragic Kingdom changed everything producing multiple hits making this punk/ska band one of the biggest band in the world. Fronted by the one and only Gwen Stefani, they are a fun band to see live. After a ten year hiatus the are performing show every now and again, if you're lucky enough to have one close by you won't want to miss it! This is from Tragic Kingdom, "Happy Now?":
Duran Duran
Many people think of Duran Duran as a band from the 1980's, however, they continued on with the hits in the 1990's and even the early 2000's. They formed in Birmingham, England in 1978 . After a few lineup changes and replacing the original singer Stephen Duffy with Simon Le Bon, their debut self titled album did well in Europe in 1981. But the release of Rio in 1982 took them to the top of the charts worldwide, with hits like "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio". In 1993 they made a huge comeback with the "Wedding album" with the big hit "Ordinary World":
Guns N' Roses
This legendary band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985 when the bands L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose merged into one band. After a couple years of hard work they were able to record Appetite for Destruction which was released in 1987 making them one of the top bands in the world. They continued with their success into the early 1990's with Use Your Illusion parts one and two and were at the top of their game. Eventually substance abuse tore the band apart and turned best friends into enemies. But here is "You Could Be Mine" of Use Your Illusion Part 2:
I spent most the 90's living in South America and the Caribbean, so I always like to toss in a good song in Spanish from the decade.
Shakira
Shakira is a Colombian singer/songwriter that rose to fame in 1995 with the release of her album Pies Delcalzos (Bare Feet). This was before she became the blonde bombshell we all recognize today and she was very much a brunette. This song came off of the same album in 1995, and I first remember hearing in when I was in Puerto Rico. This is "Un Poco de Amor" (A Little bit of Love):
