Entrance of the Yankari Game Reserve, Bauchi State, Nigeria
This month's prompt is presented in the form of an interesting question: "If you had a whole day where you could do anything you wanted, what would you do?" My response to this question is as follows: If I had the opportunity to spend an entire day without worrying about my daily obligations, I would utilise such time to travel and explore the beautiful scenery and wildlife at the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State, Nigeria.
Lodge suites at the Yankari Game Reserve
Sightseeing and going on trips to amazing places are activities that I enjoy. The Yankari Game Reserve is one of the most interesting places to visit in Nigeria and has been on the list of places I plan to explore because of its unique location and rich biodiversity, especially in terms of wildlife. Spending an entire day at a beautiful place like this would enable me to take a break from the normal routine of my daily life and have some fun in the process.
The spectacular Wikki Warm Springs
The Yankari Game Reserve is a large wildlife park that offers numerous attractions for tourists and fun-seekers. Since I have the opportunity to spend a day as I wish, I would start my tour of this beautiful wildlife haven by visiting its spectacular warm water springs, of which there are four in total. Among the four warm water springs, the Wikki Warm Spring is the largest and most popular. I would spend more time exploring it than the others because it is the one that I have known about the longest, thanks to my past experiences of watching and learning about it in documentaries on TV during my juvenile years.
The Yankari Game Reserve Museum
After satisfying my curiosity and physical senses at the warm springs, my next stop would be the museum at the Wikki camp, the tourist center of the game reserve, which coincidentally has the same name as the warm spring I visited earlier. Museums are known to be centers where a large amount of historical information about events and people is curated and stored for preservation and education. My decision to visit the museum immediately after the warm spring is to enrich myself with the knowledge of the history of the game reserve. I will spend a fair amount of time learning about this amazing place to gain a broader perspective of its origin and the impact it has had on its local environment and tourism in the country. I believe this will give me a better insight into the reserve as a tourist.
The endangered species of the West African Lion at the Yankari Game Reserve
Finally, after equipping myself with knowledge of the game reserve, I would proceed to what I consider to be the highlight of my tour: a safari to see the diverse population of wildlife in their natural habitat, dispersed around the reserve. I have long been fascinated with the idea of observing elephants, hippos, buffalos, lions, birds, and baboons, to name a few, that roam the lands of the reserve at a close but safe distance. The safari would enable me to transform my idea into reality. During the safari, the species of lion on the reserve, the West African Lion, will be the main focus of my trip, as it is an endangered species whose population is almost extinct. I would like to understand how this endangered species behaves on the reserve and the impact it has on the rich ecosystem.
Safari Trucks at the Yankari Game Reserve
The safari to see the abundant and diverse wildlife at the Yankari Game Reserve would be the perfect way to end this special day. Although the activities undertaken during this tour may appear hectic to many people, for me, it is a fun way to enjoy this free day! What can be more rewarding and rejuvenating than indulging oneself in an interesting hobby?
