I heard the City bell chyme three times indicating 3am. I quickly jerked up from the kitchen chair. I had to complete the cake I was making for Jack. How on earth did I sleep off. I stayed up till day break trying my best to perfect Jack's birthday cake.
According to him the party would be at Biggies hotel by 9am. I was very PUNCTUAL to the event. I arrived at the venue 30 minutes earlier to avoid disappointing Jack. Eventually I stayed there till 10am before people started coming in for the party. Then the celebrant finally arrived hand in hand with his girlfriend. I walked up to him.
"So much for the party starting by 9am"
"Sorry About That, had to do some finishing touch with my babe."
"Anyways happy birthday to you and here's the cake I made for you."
"Oh my Sonia, I forgot to tell you not go bother making the cake."
"But we agreed last week that I'll make the cake."
"Babe got me 3 cakes already. Also I couldn't trust you enough not to disappoint me."
"There you go again with your trust issues. And I stayed up all night for nothing."
Jack has been my childhood friend, we literally grew up together. Somewhere along the line, I developed strong feelings for him. But we can never be together because he can never get himself to trust me after my father betrayed his father and led to his death.
Few years later, Jack won an award at the company and he wanted to throw a big party to celebrate. Once he told me about this, I took one week leave from work to give me enough time to help Jack prepare for the party. That was how COMMITTED I was to anything that concerned Jack. During this one week, I spent more time with Jack and this got his girlfriend jealous and she walked up to me one day.
"Sonia, just because you are here to help doesn't mean you should get too comfortable and too touchy with my guy."
"Jane what do you mean?"
"Cut the crab. I see how you look at him. I see how you hold his hands with passion at every slight opportunity."
"Believe me I can never compete with you. Jack and I can never be together. The whole world knows this."
"Yet you want him so badly. Why did you offer to help in the first place?"
"Because I'll always be there for him. Will you?"
I said angrily and stormed out.
The award party was awesome. Watching everything go as planned gave me great me joy. The hall was filled to the brim with friends and well wishers. I didn't sleep through out last night, trying to do some finishing touches. I needed to escape to somewhere quiet to catch a little sleep. I decided to go to the office library, nobody ever comes there. I walked in slowly, closed the door slowly. On switching on the lights, I saw a shocking scenario.
Jack was shirtless and pants down, in his arms were the company manager's wife. She quickly got dressed and ran out of the Library. I was Left alone with Jack.
"Sonia how much do I have to pay you to keep your mouth shut?"
"Oh C'mon Jack you know I'm not MATERIALISTIC"
"For Real Sonia, no one can ever know about this or I'm doomed for life."
"I understand. Besides you don't need to buy my trust."
Few weeks past, I couldn't get myself to see Jack. I couldn't stand the presence of him and his girlfriend and act like everything was normal. We weren't in a relationship, but that scenario at the award ceremony broke my heart.
"What would make him do such?" I asked myself. "Wasn't his girlfriend enough for him? Why are men never satisfied with one woman?"
I was still contemplating on this when I heard a loud bang at the door. I opened the door and Jack barged in with anger written all over his face.
"You expect me to trust you, when you are exactly like your father. Lying, betraying bitch."
"Jack where is all this coming from, what have I done?"
"I should be asking you that. You have ruined my life that's what you've done."
"Jack you need to calm down and tell me exactly what happened."
"Sonia how do you do it really? You pretend to be so caring but stab me at the back the first chance you get."
"Jack if you are not going to tell me what I did wrong, you should leave. I can't take any more insults from you."
"Yeah, I'll leave. Thanks a lot for spreading the news of what happened at the award ceremony to everybody in the company."
"Jack what are you talking about, I'd never do that."
"How do you explain this?"
He said throwing the company magazine at my feet. I picked it up and the cover page read.
"MR JACK BAGS AWARD AND BAGS HIS BOSS' WIFE ALSO"
"And you think I leaked this?"
"Who else would. You are the only one that saw us."
"Jack it's not like you committed the act with me."
"I trust the manager's wife, she would never do this."
"Oh you trust a lady you just met few months ago, but you wouldn't trust me that have been there for you since day one."
The argument went on and on and on. Eventually it was discovered that the manager's wife was actually the one that came clean and exposed everything.
In no time, Jack was sacked. Immediately Jane heard about the scandal, she broke up with him. Jack was left jobless, heartbroken and devastated. He was actually considering suicide when Someone Walked Into The House.
"Sonia, have you come to mock me?"
"Don't say that. No Matter The Circumstance, I WILL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU."
He fell into my arms and cried deeply.
"Sonia I'm so sorry I never trusted you."

Most times we trust the wrong people and ignore the clear signs right in our faces.
