This is one of the toughest guides I have ever had to write. The entire reason to watch this show is to see the mystery unfold. As a result, basically anything I say can spoil it.
So let's start there. I think the fact that the show has some many twists and turns that it can easily spoiled is a huge point in its favor. I honestly did not see any of them coming. Considering I have seen a ton of movies and TV shows and the idea of The Eternaut is not even that original, it is quite surprising that I was... well... so surprised. I have seen everything in this show before. But I have not seen it unfold in the way it does in this show. I have also not seen it done with this characters and in Argentina.
To tell you the truth, I don't even want to translate the name of the show for you. I looked it up right now and even that would have been a spoiler. I watched all six episodes and it actually provided a spoiler for me.
So what can I say? First, episodes one and two are OK but they aren't very impressive. Since it happens so early, I can share that a mysterious snow falls in the middle of summer in Argentina. If you are out in this snow unprotected, it immediately kills you. As a result, the first two episodes play out like a very long Twilight Zone episodes that introduces characters with intertwining stories. The show does not become truly interesting until the end of episode two. From there, the twists and turns begin... and they never stop. So please be prepared to get through a couple of episodes. you will appreciate it later.
This might sound like it is a non-stop adrenaline rush, but that is far from the case. The show is far more slow and cerebral. Probably because I am used to American shows that know the audience craves non-stop instant gratification, I found the pace of the show far too slow. I think fifteen minutes could have been cut out from every episode. But because the story was so compelling, I looked past the slow pace.
There is not a ton of action (again this is more cerebral) but when it does occur it is pretty exciting especially considering they are clearly operating on a very small budget.
I guess the best way I can describe it is that it is like Stranger Things for adults. I know, I know, that is like saying it is every sci-fi movie from the 80s, but this has a modern feel to it. And they also create interesting characters and develop the relationships between them just like Stranger Things does.
I was also surprised that the show did not end after the six episodes. I thought it would be a limited series. But I was wrong. It ended on a very interesting cliffhanger that has me eager to see the next chapters. Luckily, Netflix has already announced that there will be one more season containing eight episodes to conclude the story. I am really looking forward to it.
So if you like sci-fi and a re willing to put up with a slow pace and either subtitles or dubbed audio, I would definitely recommend The Etrernaut.
