Religion, sometimes I ask myself what drives people to religion, why does it command such attention and faith. I am a religious person so to a larger extent I understand and I can gve these answers to an extent, but as with everything I believ once people see lacunas they can exploit to their selfish advantage, they tend to exploit it. Religion has become unfortunately in some instances marketable commodities.
In many Christian circles, particularly within the Charismatic movements, the "Prosperity Gospel" has become the engine of commercialization. This doctrine suggests that financial blessing, faith, positive confession, and donations to religion causes increase in one's material wealth. The tool or what it is called is "Seed-Sowing". Congregants are encouraged to give offerings, with the promise of a supernatural "hundred-fold" return. "Big money" pastors, or "celebrity preachers," often live lives that mirror secular business tycoons. Their assets frequently include, Private Jets: Often justified as necessary tools for "global evangelism," though they frequently serve as status symbols, Designer Brands, Real Estate etc People, myself included argue that this creates a "celebrity cult" where the religious leader becomes the brand. The church is no longer a community center but a corporation, using marketing and branding to expand its "market share.", while selling “hope” The Prosperity Gospel and similar "pay-to-pray" schemes disproportionately target the poor, who see these "donations" as their only hope for escaping systemic poverty.
While the organizational structure of Islam differs from the hierarchical "mega-church" model, it is not immune to exploitation. The exploitation here isn’t always in the form of money but in various Muslim-majority nations, religion is often weaponized by political elites. This is a form of spiritual exploitation where the religion is used to stifle the voices of the poor while a blind eye is turned when it concerns the rich, who are also muslims. The exploitation of religious sentiment for the purposes of terrorism is perhaps the most devastating form of manipulation, as it transforms faith into a tool for violenc. This process relies heavily on a crazy brainwashing, which systematically dismantles an individual’s existing moral framework In the context of extremist interpretations of Islam, this exploitation often begins with the isolation of vulnerable individuals, typically young men and women facing economic hardship or social displacement, who are then fed highly politicized version of religion. For instance, where im from Boko Haram serves as a case study in how religious rhetoric is weaponized to manufacture conflict. The group’s name, which roughly translates to "Western education is forbidden," is itself a rebranding of religious identity intended to create a divide between the faithful and the modern world.
By exploiting loopholes, Boko Haram justifies the killing of fellow Muslims, arguing that those who participate in democratic processes or attend secular schools have abandoned the faith. This effectively removes the barrier against violence, as the victim is no longer seen as a human being or a co-religionist, but as an enemy of God. The brainwashing techniques used by such groups are deeply rooted in the exploitation of the human need for belonging and purpose. New recruits are often subjected to intense "study sessions" where the Quran is quoted selectively and out of context to emphasize themes of martyrdom and divine reward. In the case of Boko Haram, this exploitation reached a place with the use of "female suicide bombers," many of whom were young girls kidnapped during raids. These captives were subjected to a mixture of physical abuse, starvation, and constant religious messaging designed to make them believe that their only path to redemption or relief from suffering was through a martyrdom. Furthermore, the leadership of groups like Boko Haram often utilizes the promise of the afterlife to mask ambitions for power. While the foot soldiers are brainwashed into believing they are fighting for a global Caliphate, the upper echelons of the organization often operate more like a criminal syndicate, profiting from kidnappings and the control of local resources.
This creates a tragic paradox where the followers are exploited into sacrificing their lives for a divine cause that is, in reality, a mechanism for the enrichment and political empowerment of a few radicalized elites. The ultimate victim in this scenario is the religion itself, which is creates a Negative rhetoric of what Islama is about, same religion makes it a taboo to commit suicide of any form, same religion forbids the killing of women and children in any war like fight. The transformation of faith that preaches peace, love and tranquility to something is crazy, because im very sure all the major religions preach peace and love for one another but the reality is different.
