Our Material World
Our world is facing a very tense moment. We often do not have enough accurate information, which can lead to misunderstandings. I believe the concept of “Two-Eyed Seeing” is very important.
“Two-Eyed Seeing” is a Mi'kmaw guiding principle developed by Elder Albert Marshall, I heard. It means learning to use one eye with the strengths of Indigenous ways of knowing and the other eye with the strengths of Western ways of knowing, and then using both together for better understanding and outcomes, especially in collaboration, education, and health, and more. It promotes valuing diverse perspectives, integrating knowledge systems, and achieving balance for the benefit of all people, fostering respect and preventing one system from dominating another.
I think we need a more holistic view of life, and this kind of whole way of thinking is necessary to move through these chaotic and confusing times. Accepting, waiting, witnessing, changing, moving, and taking action are not always easy, but we need to look at our situation more broadly during this difficult time.
I saw an interesting sticker on a small Japanese car, which I believe was a Honda. On the back of the car, there were many interesting stickers, including funny, ironic, and unique ones.
This “The beatings will continue until morale improves” sticker looks a bit scary, but it’s actually true. The picture really looks like our world.
This sticker is true in a way. Our society often tells us to stay positive even without solid evidence or proof. We keep smiling while ignoring the truth behind us.
I don’t want to realize the truth only after we are already in the mouth of the shark.

私たちの物質的な世界
世界は、今とても緊張した時代を迎えています。正確な情報が十分ではないため、誤解が生まれてしまうことも多々あります。こんな時代は特に「二つの目で見る」という考え方がとても重要だと思います。
「二つの目で見る（Two-Eyed Seeing）とは、ミクマク族の長老アルバート・マーシャルによって提唱された指針であると聞きました。これは、一つの目で先住民の知の強みを見て、もう一つの目で西洋の知の強みを見ることを学び、その両方を同時に用いることで、より良い理解と成果を得るという考え方だそうです。特に協働、教育、医療などの分野で重視されているとのこと。この考え方は、多様な視点を尊重し、知識体系を統合し、すべての人のための調和を実現することを促し、どちらか一方の体系が支配することを防ぎながら、互いの尊重を育てるのだそうです。
私たちにはもっと全体的な生き方や視点が必要なのではないでしょうか。そして、このような全体性を大切にする考え方こそが、この混乱し不安定な時代を乗り越えるために必要なのではないかと思うのです。
受け入れること、待つこと、見守ること、変化すること、動くこと、そして行動することは、本当に簡単なことではありません。でも、この困難な時期には、自分たちの状況をもっと広い視野で見る必要があるのだと思います。
小さな日本車に面白いステッカーを見つけました。たぶんホンダの車だったと思います。その車の後ろには、面白そうなステッカーがたくさん貼られていて、ユーモアのあるものや皮肉なもの、ユニークなものなどがありました。
その中の 「意欲が向上するまで殴り続ける」 というステッカーは少し怖い感じがしますが、どこか本当のことのようにも思えます。その絵は、まるで今の世界の姿のように見えました。
このステッカーは、ある意味で本当のことを言っていると思います。私たちの現実は、確かな証拠もないまま前向きでいなさいと言い続けることがよくあります。背後にある真実を無視したまま、何の保証もなく笑顔でい続けているのかもしれません。
サメの口の中にすでに入ってしまい、手遅れになってから真実に気づくようなことにはなりたくはないものです。
