Un rato en la Casa de la Música de Artemisa/A While at the Artemisa House of Music (Esp-Eng)

Ayer en la mañana, por cuestiones de trabajo, estuve en Artemisa. Luego de terminar mis labores ya era medio día y unas colega de trabajo que viven allí, me invitaron a pasar un rato por un lugar donde la ciudad se viste de fiesta, un sitio que es pura melodía, la Casa de la Música. Olvídate de los lugares comunes, porque este es otra cosa, aquí se respira cubania.

Yesterday morning, for work reasons, I was in Artemisa. After finishing my tasks, it was already noon, and some coworkers who live there invited me to spend some time at a place where the city dresses up in celebration, a spot that is pure melody: the House of Music. Forget about ordinary places, because this one is something else — here, you breathe Cuban spirit.

Como pueden apreciar este es un hermoso inmueble con una arquitectura colonial que resalta y se diferencia entre el resto de las casas de esta zona. Esta casa abrió sus puertas como lo que es hoy en 2017, pero no en cualquier lado. Está en la Calle 33 (la calle principal de Artemisa) entre 52 y 54, en lo que fue el antiguo Casino Español. El Casino Español de Artemisa, conocido también como Casino Español Cubano, fue una sociedad de instrucción y recreo fundada a principios del siglo XX. Más tarde, pasó a llamarse Casino Hispano Cubano. En sus instalaciones, funcionó una emisora de radio de la ciudad. Un sitio con mucha historia que la EGREM se encargó de restaurar para traer lo mejor de nuestra música.

As you can see, this is a beautiful building with colonial architecture that stands out and differs from the other houses in this area. This house opened its doors as what it is today in 2017, but not just anywhere. It’s located on Calle 33 (Artemisa’s main street) between 52 and 54, in what used to be the old Spanish Casino. The Spanish Casino of Artemisa, also known as the Cuban Spanish Casino, was a society for instruction and recreation founded in the early 20th century. Later, it became known as the Hispano-Cuban Casino. A city radio station once operated from its facilities. A site with a lot of history that EGREM took care to restore in order to bring us the best of our music.

Nos sentamos en el Álbum Kafé, un espacio que está ubicado afuera en el portal con toldos y mesas para tomar el fresco, cervezas, picaderas y seguir compartiendo. A pesar de que en ese momento no había ninguna de las actividades que alli se hacen, si había muy buena músicacy varias personas compartían con amigos, familiares. Aquí le hacen un monumento al son, al bolero, a la timba y a los nuevos talentos. El salón principal, bautizado como “Un montón de estrellas” en honor al inolvidable Polo Montañés, es cosa seria.

We sat down at the Álbum Kafé, a space located outside in the portal area with awnings and tables to enjoy the fresh air, beers, snacks, and keep chatting. Even though no activities were happening at that moment, there was really good music playing, and several people were hanging out with friends and family. Here, they pay tribute to son, bolero, timba, and new talent. The main hall, named "A Bunch of Stars" in honor of the unforgettable Polo Montañés, is serious business.

El sitio es grande y está pensado para gozar y divertirse. Este Salón Principal tiene capacidad para unas 300 almas, dos barras para servir y una tarima que es puro corazón. La pista de baile es un imán. En la parte de arriba hay un Salón VIP con un espacio para' los que quieren ver el show desde lo más alto, con una vista de primera. Pero el plan no es solo para la rumba, la Casa es como la madre de la comunidad. Aqui también hay espacio al diálogo, a la mujer, al libro y al talento joven.

The place is large and designed for enjoyment and fun. This Main Hall has a capacity of about 300 souls, two bars for service, and a stage that is pure heart. The dance floor is a magnet. Upstairs, there is a VIP Lounge with space for those who want to watch the show from the top, with a first-class view. But the plan isn’t just about the rumba — the House is like the mother of the community. Here, there is also room for dialogue, for women, for books, and for young talent.

Según supe aquí organizan el Festival Artemisa Mestiza, que es una fusión de tradiciones y cultura que no te puedes imaginar. Eso sí, aquí la casa tiene sus reglas, se paga en moneda nacional, el derecho de admisión se lo guardan y se pide respeto, porque esto es para la gente que viene a disfrutar de verdad.

From what I learned, they organize the Artemisa Mestiza Festival here, which is a fusion of traditions and culture you can’t even imagine. That said, the house has its rules: you pay in national currency, they reserve the right of admission, and respect is demanded, because this is for people who come to truly enjoy themselves.

Debo decir que pasé un rato muy agradable allí con mis colegas mientras esperaba un transporte de regreso a mi casa. Hubo charla, risa y cerveza fría, por supuesto. Tambien hablamos de nuevos proyectos, sueños y futuras publicacionesde libros en común. La Casa de la Música de Artemisa es un punto de encuentro y es además, orgullo de la comunidad.

I have to say I had a very pleasant time there with my colleagues while waiting for a ride back home. There was chat, laughter, and cold beer, of course. We also talked about new projects, dreams, and future joint book publications. The Artemisa House of Music is a meeting point and also a source of pride for the community.
