Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have been working in the province's molecular biology laboratory, where real-time PCR tests were carried out to detect the virus. But after the pandemic passed, work here has been a bit scarce, as PCR tests for COVID are hardly ever done anymore. The truth is that, like everything that starts out well, once the furor passes, everything declines, so there wasn't much we could do here.
As the days went by, we received new reagents to perform other types of PCR tests, whether for dengue, Zika, or Chikungunya, as well as for 16 other types of respiratory viruses. When this happened, we had much more work to do until the reagents ran out and there was nothing else to do, so the workload decreased again, and we were only testing samples from other departments to help them a little with their overload, and we continued like this for many months. The staff also decreased; many left to live abroad, others went to work for the famous MSMEs because they earn more money, etc., and so there are only a few of us left here, just enough for the night shifts.
Today I am on duty and, to my surprise and delight, when I arrived I was given new equipment to make new determinations. I think there is no greater joy for a professional than to feel fulfilled and doing what they love. The truth is that I love my profession, and there is no greater pleasure for me than to find something new to do and study at work, because that is what it is all about: using our knowledge at all times and not wasting it by losing time or letting it fall into oblivion, because we sacrificed ourselves to study a profession for a reason.
The new equipment is simple, very small indeed, and is still being installed by the people authorized to carry out this task. It is used to detect multiple nucleic acid sequences specific to Gram-negative bacteria in positive blood cultures of Gram-negative bacteria. This is something new for us and requires days of study and preparation in order to develop the appropriate techniques, gather the necessary materials, and prepare the conditions for research. However, at least it is something that will make us feel useful and will help to get the molecular biology laboratory up and running again.
For a professional, there is nothing like practicing their profession, so once again we will feel good about ourselves, doing something that is so important for human beings and their social and professional development. I am on duty today, but I feel happy. I can't wait to get started and contribute to the health of our population, because healthcare professionals owe it to the population. Desde que comenzó la pandemia por COVID-19, trabajo en el laboratorio de biología molecular de la provincia, lugar donde se realizaban los PCR en tiempo real para detectar el virus, Pero después que paso la pandemia el trabajo por acá ha estado un poco escaso, pues ya casi no se realizan pruebas de PCR para COVID, pues la verdad como todo cuanto empieza va muy bien, pues ya después cuando pasa la furia todo decae, así que no había muchas cosas que pudiéramos hacer por acá.
Con el paso de los días nos entraron reactivos nuevos para hacer otros tipos de PCR, ya sea para dengue, Zika, o Chikungunya y también para 16 tipos de virus respiratorios más, cuando esto ocurrió, tuvimos mucho más contenido de trabajo hasta que se agotaron los reactivos y ya no hubo nada más que hacer, así que el trabajo volvió a mermar y solo estábamos haciendo muestras de otros departamentos para ayudarlos un poco por la sobrecarga que tenían, y así continuamos por muchos meses. También el personal mermo, muchos se fueron a vivir al extranjero, otros se fueron a trabajar para las famosas mipymes porque ganan más dinero etc., y así vamos quedando unos pocos por acá, apenas para las guardias nocturnas.
Hoy estoy de guardia y para mayor sorpresa y alegría me entregan al recibir el turno un equipo nuevo para hacer nuevas determinaciones. Pienso que no hay mayor alegría para un profesional que sentirse realizado y haciendo lo que le gusta, la verdad mi profesión me encanta, y no hay más placer para mí que encontrar en el trabajo alguna determinación nueva para hacer y estudiar, pues de eso se trata, de usar nuestros conocimientos en todo momento y no malgastarlos perdiendo tiempo ni que queden en el olvido, pues para algo nos sacrificamos por estudiar una profesión.
El nuevo equipo es algo sencillo, muy pequeñito por cierto y aún está en proceso de instalación por las personas autorizadas a desarrollar dicha tarea, su uso es para detectar múltiples secuencias de ácidos nucleicos específicas para bacterias gramnegativas en hemocultivos positivos de bacterias gramnegativas, esto es algo que es nuevo para nosotros y que lleva días de estudio y preparación, para poder sacar las técnicas correspondientes, materiales necesarios y preparar las condiciones para su investigación, pero al menos es algo que nos va a hacer sentir útiles y que servirá para echar a andar nuevamente el laboratorio de biología molecular.
Para un profesional, no hay nada como ejercer su profesión, así que nuevamente volveremos a sentirnos buenos para algo, algo que es tan importante para el ser humano y su desarrollo social y profesional. Yo por mi parte estoy de guardia hoy, pero me siento feliz, ya no veo la hora de poder echarlo a andar y contribuir con la salud de nuestra población, pues el profesional de la salud a la población se debe. No hay nada más hermoso que sentirse realizado en la vida y esta es una muy buena forma, yo por mi parte me despido de ustedes y espero vernos pronto nuevamente. Bendiciones miles y feliz día.
