When it comes to the word addiction, there's already a well-perceived understanding about it, which undeniably we've been victims of-not the addiction but the perception. This, the prompt did well to highlight. And the reality is, that's what we have to come to know and what we get when this matter or the word comes up in our discussions or conversations. Can we say it's an imbalance in our minds?
To address the prompt, I had to look up the word “addiction” in online dictionaries. I was able to check a few, but I wish to go with what I found on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. I found two definitions (switched to simple definitions) which I'll be sharing here. The first and second respectively are; “a strong and harmful need to regularly have something (such as a drug) or do something (such as gamble)” and “an unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something.”
Well, the dictionary too has this view of it, though not neglecting the other view, which makes the point for this post on the possibility of addiction being good. Addiction, as seen from the definitions, shows a common matter, and that's the fact that addiction has to do with a strong interest, a need and an unstoppable action. It's about getting so much into a thing that stopping or passing by for a day or hours without doing it seems difficult.
We've seen the destructive effects of addiction from the common understanding of it. With that, it's hard to see addiction as anything other than that destructive habit. Well, even dictionaries and popular opinions or statements don't say otherwise. But is it factual? Perhaps, people can be “addicted” to good things rather than the bad things addiction is associated with. In lay terms, what addiction means suggests that people can be addicted to reading books, listening to music, exercising and working out, writing, and so on.
There's a thin line though to these things, and a concern. This is that, too much of a thing, even if not harmful can be bad. Sometimes, we need a break from that good thing we're addicted to for the sake of our minds, to be refreshed and opened to new things. Sadly, some could have side effects. In the sense of a “good addiction,” I don't really lean towards that as I consider that there's a level of healthy interest we can have in a good thing as opposed to a “good addiction.”
So, as much as we might want to consider how addiction can be good, we have to consider that thin line. And maybe, have a healthy interest rather than an addiction. No, this isn't the natural perception of the word doing a work in my head as might be considered, but about keeping a check, even for the good things we're heavily attached to or interested in.
Thank you for reading!
