Every year, houses, streets, stores and people glow in anticipation to Christmas. It's not all about going to people's houses, eatin, receiving gifts and playing.
Having said this, what does Christmas truly mean?
Christmas symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ which is the promise, bye love of God to us. A savior given to us symbolizing love, forgiveness, salvation, light, hope and giving.
In Luke 2:10–11 (KJV)
“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” this symbolizes God's unfailing love to we humans, HIS SON.
When I was little, I was always eager for Christmas because we get new clothes and we also get to leave the house to visit relatives and Friends. This is the only time we get to go out as kids and we always make good use of this opportunity to visit our friends and teachers. Not just that, we get to eat and receive gifts from relatives visiting our home.
Growing up, I realized this isn't all to Christmas.
Christmas is love, giving and not just receiving, forgiveness: God is a perfect example of a forgiver and a lover, showing kindness, and Hope. Christmas brings me and my family together. We all live in different states due to work and studies, Christmas is the only time we get to unite and have fun together. The joy and happiness of seeing each other after a long year makes everything right. We have fun together, eat together, drink and play games then we visit friends we've not seen for a while.
One day, when we were roaming the street of ogun state all in the name of Christmas, my sister sprained her ankle due to high heels. I laughed a lot before telling her sorry because I've always warned her not to wear heels but she loves putting on heels.
I also remember getting chased by a masquerade in otukpo, Benue State all in the name of Christmas. Every Christmas, masquerade go round beating girls that offended them before or collecting money from passerbys. I was new there so I insulted one telling him to go get a life instead of begging for money all in the name of Christmas. We almost faught but God saved my life that day because how will I explain to people that I faught a masquerade and got the beating of my life? Me that can't fight(please don't laugh). Nonetheless, I love seeing them dance and beat some people all for fun of Christmas.
This made me realize the true meaning of Christmas. It's not all about the food, the gift and drinks but the joy that comes from seeing your loved one's and laughing about everything, talking about your experiences all through the year and also creating memories together.
Christmas taught me that it's not about having in abundance but sharing the little you have and putting a smile on people's face. This is a true meaning of God's love and love for others which is Christmas.
Thank you
