My Sign out day
This week’s topic left me thinking all day about what my unforgettable event could be. I’ve attended so many events, and each one, in its own way, still lingers in my memory like it happened just yesterday. But after much thought, one event stood out clearly, my sign out day.
Sign-out day is a special tradition in many Nigerian tertiary institutions. It marks the end of exams for final-year students, a day to celebrate the journey and the beginning of a new chapter. For me, it happened on the 4th of October, 2024.
I had a 3 PM exam that day, and preparations were in full swing. But preparing wasn’t just about reading, it was about getting ready to celebrate, Some were ironing their outfits, some arranging and re-arranging, everyone buzzing with excitement. You could feel the energy everywhere.
The extent students go to make the day memorable is something else. People bought new trousers, clean white shirts for signatures, sneakers, wigs, and styled their hair, all just to mark this one special day. Of course, I wasn’t left out. I had been saving for this moment for a while, if only you knew how long😂
Funny thing is, I’m not someone who likes fixing nails casually, I just do them occasionally, I always feel uncomfortable doing chores with them, whether long or short. But for this occasion, I made an exception. A day before my sign-out, I went to fix my nails, the nails was a bit long, that even the nail technician tried convincing me to go for something shorter since I had an exam, but I told him, The exam is not my problem o, na my sign-out day dey my mind😄
When the day finally came, we refused to trek to school like we usually did. Our house isn’t far from school, but that day, we just couldn’t. The vibe felt like Christmas morning, when we were kids, that kind of joy.😂
Even our lecturers joined in the celebration, some of them wore white too.
Thankfully, the exam wasn’t tough. We gave it our best and walked out with wide smiles, ready to celebrate.
We danced, took pictures, and had so much fun. From the school grounds to the place we booked for the after party, the joy was something else. Friends came from different places, some bearing gifts, just to celebrate with us. It was really an amazing day
Till today, whenever I look at those pictures and videos, I smile. The memories are still fresh, and I’m so grateful for that day and of course, it was an unforgettable event.
