Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today’s topic is from Hive-Reachout which says:Traditional or Modern Medication or Both? So let’s dive in.
Honestly, we already know that traditional medicine has been in Africa for a long time. To the extent that our parents, grandparents, or to say our forefathers used leaves, roots, herbs, etc., to treat any sickness. And to be honest, it’s not like traditional medicine doesn’t work, it really works. But for me, if I have to choose between both, I will choose modern medication.
The reason why I prefer modern medicine is because it works faster, especially when the sickness is really disturbing. For example, if someone has malaria, headaches, serious body pain, etc., modern medicine can reduce it quickly and help you feel energised or stronger within a short time.
Also, another reason is because modern medication is more clear and controlled. Why is that? When you go to the hospital, the doctor or the pharmacist will tell you exactly what to take, how to take it, and how many times you should take it in a day. The reason why we are told is so that we won’t misuse the drugs. Because sometimes, sickness becomes worse not because of the illness itself, but because we used the wrong medicine or used it wrongly.
But with traditional medicine, there is no exact measurement. Someone might tell us to boil leaves, or drink it morning and night, but you won’t know the correct amount. Truth is, too much traditional medicine is not good because it can affect the body, and too little of it won’t even work. Sometimes, we don’t even know what they used to prepare the traditional medicine, especially if someone else prepared it for us.
Another reason why I prefer modern medication is because it has been tested. Yes, I know some drugs can have side effects, but at least those side effects are known and can be managed. But with traditional medicine, you might not know the side effects until it starts affecting you.
Another thing is that with modern medication, doctors can check what is really wrong with us. We can do tests and know the exact problem instead of guessing anyhow. Because sometimes what looks like ordinary stomach pain might be an ulcer, an infection, or better still something serious. But with traditional medicine, people are just treated based on what they think it is.
To be honest, I’m the type of person that doesn’t really like drugs. When I’m sick, I usually try to endure it first because I hate taking medicine. But what will make me take modern medication is when I don’t have any choice, or when I want the sickness to go fast. And anytime I finally take drugs, I always see the results. That’s one reason I like modern medication more.
Lastly, I like modern medication because it is easier to take and neater. But with traditional medicine, it involves plenty leaves, bitter taste, and strong smell. If you’re having headaches or stomach pain, you might have to boil many leaves, and the smell alone can make you refuse to drink it.
In conclusion, I prefer modern medication because it is faster, more reliable, and it comes with proper instructions from medical professionals. But traditional medicine may still have its place, but for me, modern medication is what I trust. Yes, we have some people that prefer traditional medicine because we are different, and I don’t expect all of us to have the same preferences.
