The name Sringeri literally means a string of pearls. It is said that this name was given to the town by Adi Shankara himself. In the seventh century, its bathing ghat (a place for taking bath) was excavated and named after the saint Rajasekhara Saraswati, who lived here at that time.
Sringeri is situated at an altitude of about 2,000 feet above sea level on the western side of the Chikmagalur district and is just 8 km away from the famous pilgrimage centre of Subrahmanya in Shivamogga district. The area is a part of the Bhadra Plateau.
The landscape of the district is mainly forested (viz. Coffee, Cardamom and Pepper plantations) and one can enjoy spectacular views of hills on all sides.
Not far from Sringeri town , there is a place called Bheemeshwari , famous for its holy "Bheemeshwari Suktis". The spring that emerges at this spot has medicinal properties and good for eyesight according to Hindu scriptures. Even today, thousands of devotees come to take holy dips in the water here.
Another place of religious significance is the "Saraswathi Gangamane" , where the river Sharavati originates. The river flows through the whole of Chikmagalur district, and then enters Shivamogga district to join River Cauvery.

In this land of great rishis and saints, there was a saint by name Sidhanthidambarayaru. He lived at Sringeri in 14th century A.D , who composed a famous Kannada book called "Sharanatilaka". It is said that he was bestowed with divine grace by none other than Adi Shankara himself.

The exterior of Sringeri House has a rich appearance due to the scuffed wooden balcony railing that spans the full width of the first floor and two split-level pillars on jugli (verandah) flanked by two on the ground floor .

This was the first house we saw at Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village in Manipal, Karnataka. It was truly a delight to my eyes and love at first sight for me and my friend ( ) . The intricately carved pillars were a beauty beyond comprehension. We definitely won't forget the mysterious yet warm feeling this house gave us.
