A curious Buenos Aires bookstore built where a great theater-cinema of the 20th century was located

Dear and respected friends of the great Hive family, today we are going to visit “El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore” online, thanks to the cameras of my sister Myrna and her son Edgar Augusto. The bookstore is located on Santa Fe Avenue in the La Recoleta neighborhood in Buenos Aires, which was built where the "Grand Splendid Theater" once stood at the beginning of the 20th century, which preserves the original architecture, splendor, and elegance, with the original railings, the velvet curtain, and the same decoration, but redesigned so that a bookstore works inside it.

This striking structure was inaugurated in 1919, designed by the architects Peró and Torres Armengol and built by the architects Pizoney and Falcone, it had four rows of boxes and a stall for 500 spectators. The building began as a movie theater where great concerts, ballet, opera, plays, recordings, and, of course, movies were held. The theater stopped working at the end of the 1980s, but the cinema continued for almost 20 more years until, after its restructuring and a million-dollar investment, it was converted, in December 2000, into the bookstore that I present to you today.

The architectural style of the building is eclectic, it has a dome, which is a true work of art, measuring 20x19x3.65 meters, painted in 1919 by the Italian artist Nazareno Orlandi, which symbolizes peace, through a female figure, in commemoration of the end of the First World War. The owners have taken great care to keep the works of art, that the bookstore has, in good condition; in this sense, in the 1960s it was decided to remodel it, due to the deterioration that the original works of the French Marcel Jambon showed, and it was entrusted the work to the Argentine Raúl Soldi.

The bookstore, considered the largest in South America, has received several distinctions: in 2008, the English newspaper The Guardian cataloged it as the second-best bookstore in the world and, in 2019, the prestigious National Geographic magazine highlighted it as the most beautiful among all the bookstores. It is considered a tourist spot in the area, especially for foreigners and Argentines from the interior of the country.

The Ateneo Grand Splendid has 120,000 titles of physical works for sale, in an area of 4,000 square meters; In addition, it has large sections of music, exhibitions, and movies. The library services provided by the bookstore are accompanied by a restaurant and confectionery, located on the old stage where the theater used to work, where it can be tasted a good coffee or an Argentine mate, there is also a piano on which music is played that enlivens the reading.

Una curiosa librería bonaerense construida donde se encontraba un gran teatro-cine del siglo XX

Estimados y respetados amigos de la gran familia Hive, hoy vamos a visitar online la librería El Ateneo Grand Splendid, gracias a las cámaras de mi hermana Myrna y su hijo Edgar Augusto. La librería está ubicada en la avenida Santa Fe del barrio La Recoleta en Buenos Aires, la cual está levantada donde otrora estaba el “Teatro Grand Splendid” a principios del siglo XX, de la que conserva la arquitectura original, esplendor y elegancia, con las barandas originales, el telón de terciopelo y la misma decoración, pero rediseñada para que dentro de ella funcione una librería.

Esta llamativa estructura fue inaugurada en 1919, diseñada por los arquitectos Peró y Torres Armengol y construida por los arquitectos Pizoney y Falcone, contaba con cuatro hileras de palcos y la platea para 500 espectadores. El edificio se inició como un cine-teatro en donde se realizaron grandes conciertos, ballet, ópera, obras de teatro, grabaciones, y, por supuesto, cine. El teatro dejó de funcionar a fines de los 80, pero el cine continuó por casi 20 años más hasta que, luego de su reestructuración y una millonaria inversión, fue convertida, en diciembre del 2000, en la librería que hoy les presento.

El estilo arquitectónico del edificio es ecléctico, posee una cúpula, que es una verdadera obra de arte, de 20x19x3,65 metros pintada en 1919 por el artista italiano Nazareno Orlandi, que simboliza la paz, por medio de una figura femenina, en conmemoración del fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Los propietarios se han esmerado por mantener en buen estado las obras de arte que posee la Librería, en tal sentido, en la década de los 60 se decidió remodelarla, debido al deterioro que mostraban las obras originales del francés Marcel Jambon, y se le encomendó el trabajo al argentino Raúl Soldi.

La librería, considerada la mas grande de Sudamérica, ha gozado de varias distinciones: en 2008, el periódico inglés The Guardian, la catalogó como la segunda mejor librería del mundo y, en 2019, la prestigiosa revista National Geographic la destaca como la más bella entre todas las librerías. Se le considera un punto turístico de la zona, sobre todo para los extranjeros y argentinos del interior del país.

El Ateneo Grand Splendid cuenta con 120.000 títulos de obras en físico para la venta, en una superficie de 4000 metros cuadrados; además, tiene grandes secciones de música, exposiciones y películas. Los servicios bibliotecarios que presta la librería están acompañados con un restaurante y confitería, ubicado en el antiguo escenario donde antes funcionaba el teatro, para degustar un buen café o mate argentino, allí se encuentra un piano en el cual se ejecuta música que ameniza la lectura.

Por otra parte, también es posible descansar plácidamente en uno de los sillones colocados a ambos lados de la sala principal o en los exquisitos palcos que funcionan como pequeñas salas de lectura. Además, para los más chicos, la librería ha dedicado un sector en el sótano, al que se tiene acceso por medio de una escalera mecánica, un salón de venta de música y libros infantiles, donde los chicuelos pueden leer tirados en el suelo sin que nadie les moleste; por último, quiero destacar que en el piso superior se encuentra una gran sala para exposiciones.
