Greetings my dear friends of Architecture+Design, after a while without posting on my blog, due to health issues, I have returned and it is here that I wanted to do it, because it is one of my favorite communities and where I find endless content of great quality. For this return I want to bring you an emblematic building of my city, where wonderful things happen, almost daily, is the National Theater of Caracas.

I went to this theater the first time I attended a play on my own (without my parents) at the age of 16, I had to be in one of the balconies, the play was called "Los muertos las prefieren negras" comedy by Andrés Eloy Blanco, which satirized the dramas and passions of living in dictatorship, not only politics, but also social dictatorships. For me it was a great revelation, not only the play, but also the space where it was developed and I was captivated by its aesthetics.

Saludos mis queridos amigos de Architecture+Design, luego de un tiempo sin publicar en mi blog, por asuntos de salud, he vuelto y es por aquí que he querido hacerlo, pues es una de mis comunidades favoritas y en donde encuentro un sin fín de contenidos de gran calidad. Para este regreso les quiero traer un edificio emblemático de mi ciudad, donde ocurren cosas maravillosas, casi a diario, es el Teatro Nacional de Caracas

A éste teatro acudí la primera vez que asistí a una obra teatral por cuenta propia (sin mis padres) a la edad de 16 años, me tocó estar en uno de los balcones, la obra se llamó "Los muertos las prefieren negras" comedia de Andrés Eloy Blanco, donde se satirizaba en torno a los dramas y pasiones de vivir en dictadura, no solo la política, también las dictaduras sociales. Para mi fue una gran revelación, no sólo la obra, también el espacio donde se desarrolló y quedé prendada de su estética.

It is a work of Alejandro Chataing, Venezuelan architect famous for being the creator of several national architectural works. It was inaugurated in 1905 and counted with the collaboration of the Venezuelan classical painter Antonio Herrera Toro and the sculptor Miguel Angel Cabré (father of our painter Manuel Cabré) to give details to the imposing structure of the theater.

At the time when Joaquín Crespo exercised governmental functions, there developed in Venezuela, particularly in Caracas, an unhealthy desire to copy foreign structures and aesthetics, which has been a repeated fact in history, changing the object of desire over time. At the time we are referring to, the ideal was the French aesthetics, so Caracas was filled with works with French styles that later contrasted with the new styles copied from its architects, until Caracas became a city without personality or style of its own, and not the result of an evolutionary process of artistic work.

Es una obra de Alejandro Chataing, arquitecto venezolano famoso por ser el creador de varias obras arquitectónicas nacionales. Fue inaugurado en 1905 y contó con la colaboración del pintor clásico venezolano Antonio Herrera Toro y del escultor Miguel Ángel Cabré (padre de nuestro "pintor del Ávila" Manuel Cabré) para dar los detalles a la imponente estructura del teatro.

En la época en que Joaquín Crespo ejercía las funciones gubernamentales, se desarrolló en Venezuela, particularmente en Caracas, un deseo enfermizo de copiar las estructuras y estéticas extranjeras, lo cual ha sido un hecho repetido en la historia, cambiando el objeto del deseo a los largo del tiempo. En el momento del que hacemos referencia, el ideal era la estética francesa, así Caracas se llenó de obras con estilos afrancesados que luego contrastaron con los nuevos estilos copiados de sus arquitectos, hasta lograr que Caracas fuese una ciudad sin personalidad o estilo propio, y no el resultado de un proceso evolutivo del trabajo artístico.

For a theater of national importance it has very few seats, since it only has capacity for 664 attendees, but for the time of its inauguration it was enough to achieve a continuous affluence, since the national census establishes that for 1905 the inhabitants of Venezuela were estimated between 1,700,000 and 2,000,000 in the whole national territory. Therefore, only a small part of these, those who lived in Caracas, could enjoy the shows presented here.

This intimate space was conceived not only for the presentation of operas and plays, but also as a tribute to the diverse artistic manifestations that are drawn on its boards. A beautiful crystal chandelier illuminates seven pictorial passages by the master Antonio Herrera Toro that represent the muses of Apollo: dance, music, comedy, tragedy, eloquence, history and poetry. And just as this homage is reflected, in sculptural form, on the façade, comedy and tragedy are represented on its two main columns.

Para ser un teatro de envergadura nacional posee muy pocos asientos, ya que solo tiene aforo para 664 asistentes, pero para la época de su inauguración fue suficiente para lograr una afluencia continua, ya que el censo nacional establece que para 1905 los habitantes de Venezuela se estimaba entre 1.700.000 y 2.000.000 en todo el territorio nacional. Por lo que solo una pequeña parte de estos, los que habitaban en Caracas, podían disfrutar de los espectáculos aquí presentados.

Éste íntimo espacio fue concebido no sólo para la presentación de óperas y obras teatrales, también es un homenaje a las diversas manifestaciones artísticas que se dibujan sobre sus tablas. Del cielo del teatro se desprende una hermosa araña de cristal que ilumina siete pasajes pictóricos del maestro Antonio Herrera Toro que representan a las musas de Apolo: la danza, la música, la comedia, la tragedia, la elocuencia, la historia y la poesía. Y al igual este homenaje se ve reflejado, de manera escultórica, en la fachada están representadas la comedia y la tragedia sobre sus dos columnas principales.

Due to the restoration works, some frescoes that carpeted the walls of the theater's lobby were rescued. They simulated columns and volutes, but as modernity does not forgive, they only left some traces of their existence. If I had been in charge of the restoration, I would have done my best to rescue these frescoes, not only as a cultural contribution, but also to try to stop being a myopic city to the beauty and history that brought us here.

Debido a los trabajos de restauración se rescataron algunos frescos que tapizaban las paredes del lobby del teatro. Que simulaban columnas y volutas, pero como la modernidad no perdona, solo dejaron apenas algunos indicios de su existencia. Si la restauración hubiese estado a mi cargo, de seguro habría hecho lo posible por rescatar por completo estos frescos, no solo como aporte cultural, contribución para tratar de dejar de ser una ciudad miope a la belleza y a la historia que nos trajo hasta aquí.

The central courtyard and balconies of the theater are special, not only for its half-circle shape that makes the audio a transcendent experience, but the distribution of spaces and lighting create an atmosphere that gets you involved in what you are about to see. And when I sit in one of its seats I feel the historical need to witness the great zarzuelas that once saw the light there, and this theater was the place for the zarzuelas of the moment, this artistic expression that can be confused with opera, was the sensation of the early twentieth century.

El patio central y los balcones del teatro son especiales, no solo por su forma de medio círculo que hace del audio una experiencia trascendente, pasa que la distribución de los espacios y la iluminación crean una atmósfera que logra que te involucres en lo que estás por ver. Y cuando me siento en una de sus butacas siento la necesidad histórica de presenciar las grandes zarzuelas que alguna vez vieron la luz allí, y es que éste teatro fue lugar para la zarzuelas del momento, esta expresión artística que puede confundirse con la ópera, era la sensación de principios del siglo XX.

It is a space where numerous minor theatrical works have been presented, and when I say minor, I do not say it because they are bad or something similar, I just mean that they are experimental works of study circles such as the play "El Funambulito", where none of the actors had a name or reputation, Moreover, they were all students of the National Circus, so my daughter had the opportunity to perform on this great stage at the age of five, and more recently the school where she studies wanted to pay tribute to a great music star such as Trina Medina and used this stage for it.

Es un espacio en el que se han presentado numerosas obras teatrales menores, y al decir menores, no lo digo porque sean malas o algo parecido, solo quiero hacer referencia a que son trabajos experimentales de círculos de estudios como la obra "El Funambulito", donde ninguno de sus actores tenía nombre ni reputación, además eran todos estudiantes del Circo Nacional, así mi hija tuvo la oportunidad de presentarse ante este gran escenario a la edad de cinco años, y más recientemente el colegio donde ella estudia quiso rendir un homenaje a una gran estrella de la música como lo es Trina Medina y usó este escenario para ello.
