En Gibraltar el templo religioso más antiguo que se conoce y que aun sigue en pie es el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Europa de 1462. Está situado en el extremo sur del Peñón y era usado como el primer faro por su torre de color blanca y una luz de una lámpara de aceite que mantenía encendida el sacerdote por las noches. Los marineros le rezaban a la Virgen cuando pasaban por el Estrecho.
Almost every possible religion has passed through the little rock. There was a time when the beliefs of others were not tolerated and war was waged for defence or to impose a faith. In Gibraltar the oldest known religious temple still standing is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Europe from 1462. It is located at the southern end of the Rock and was used as the first lighthouse because of its white tower and a light from an oil lamp kept burning by the priest at night. Sailors prayed to the Virgin when passing through the Strait.
Cuando Gibraltar fue invadida en 1704 por las fuerzas anglo-holandesas de creencias protestante echaron al mar la imagen de la Virgen con su hijo en brazos. Por suerte estaba hecha de madera y fue rescatada por un pescador y puesta a salvo en la cercana ciudad de Algeciras.
When Gibraltar was invaded in 1704 by Anglo-Dutch forces of Protestant beliefs, they threw the image of the Virgin with her son in her arms into the sea. Luckily it was made of wood and was rescued by a fisherman and taken to safety in the nearby town of Algeciras.
Con la llegada de los ingleses se construyó un templo anglicano en el centro de la ciudad llamada Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad. Llama la atención los detalles dedicados a las fuerzas militares. Su construcción recuerda a una mezquita por el acabado con arcos de herradura.
With the arrival of the English, an Anglican church was built in the centre of the city called the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The details dedicated to the military forces are striking. Its construction is reminiscent of a mosque due to the horseshoe arch finish.
Uno de los detalles que hay presente en el templo más destacado, es un banderín original de la invasión de la Roca en el siglo XVII que se conserva perfectamente. Además se encuentra expuestos muchas banderas y escudos militares, junto a otros detalles y recuerdos marinos.
One of the most outstanding details present in the temple is an original pennant from the invasion of the Rock in the 17th century, which is perfectly preserved. There are also many military flags and coats of arms on display, along with other maritime details and souvenirs.
La Catedral anglicana y la Catedral de Santa María Coronada, católica, eran los únicos templo de Gibraltar con las puertas abiertas a todo viajero que quisiera verla por dentro, sentarse a descansar o a rezar sin necesidad de preguntar. Un detalle agradable.
The Anglican Cathedral and the Catholic Cathedral of St Mary Crowned were the only churches in Gibraltar with their doors open to any traveller who wanted to see inside, sit down to rest or pray, no questions asked. A nice touch.
La Catedral Santa María Coronada fue construida en el siglo XV por los españoles en los restos de una mezquita árabe y está en la calle principal de la ciudad.
Otra comunidad muy numerosa en Gibraltar es de la religión hindú. Muchos comerciantes indios decidieron quedarse en Gibraltar a vivir. Muchas de los negocios más prestigiosos de la calle principal son de origen indio. Su templo llamado Gibraltar Mandir es de prácticamente de nueva construcción al haberse construido en el año 2000.
Another large community in Gibraltar is of the Hindu religion. Many Indian merchants have decided to stay in Gibraltar to live. Many of the most prestigious businesses on the high street are of Indian origin. Their temple called the Gibraltar Mandir is practically newly built, having been constructed in 2000.

I would have loved to enter many of the temples that were closed. Possibly asking for a visit in advance would be possible so that one day I can enjoy the architecture, interior design and history.
