One of the things I like about Merida, Venezuela, is the variety of squares and churches that we can find in each of the sectors of the city. This time, our family walk took us to the Sector El Espejo, where we were able to enjoy a time full of tranquility, admiring the view offered by the place and of course its architectural works, among them, the Church Our Lady of the Mirror.
It was quite a quiet day, many places in downtown Merida were closed, it seemed like a Sunday afternoon, perhaps the merchants decided to take a break after the fair season. We began to walk in search of a place to eat and without realizing it we arrived at the Mirror Sector on Av. 8. It had been a long, long time since I had visited this area, so long that I had forgotten the beauty of its square, its church and even the municipal cemetery of the same name. I understand that it is called the mirror, because in this place they found a crystal with the image of the virgin.
Una de las cosas que me gusta de Mérida, Venezuela, es la variedad de Plazas e Iglesias, que podemos encontrar en cada uno de los sectores de la ciudad. Esta vez, nuestro paseo familiar, nos llevó al Sector El Espejo, donde logramos disfrutar de un rato lleno de tranquilidad, admirando la vista que nos ofrece el lugar y por supuesto sus obras arquitectónicas, entre ellas, la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Espejo.
Era un día bastante tranquilo, muchos sitios del centro de Mérida estaban cerrados, parecía un domingo por la tarde, tal vez, los comerciantes decidieron tomarse un descanso, después de la temporada de ferias. Comenzamos a caminar en busca de un sitio para comer y sin darnos cuenta llegamos al Sector el Espejo en la Av. 8. Hace mucho, tiempo no visitaba esta zona, tanto que había olvidado la belleza de su plaza, su iglesia e incluso el cementerio municipal del mismo nombre. Tengo entendido que se llama el espejo, porque en este lugar encontraron un cristal con la imagen de la virgen.

Upon arriving at the plaza, my son was excited, because like me, he loves to enjoy these outdoor spaces. The Plaza is small, but it is very beautiful, it is surrounded by a lot of vegetation, I noticed that some of the trees were cut down, I imagine that they were very old trees, which represented a risk of falling. But there are still some left to give us their shade and fill us with freshness every time the breeze moves their leaves.
It is a fairly simple square, with some very comfortable wrought iron benches, ideal for a chat, reading or resting. In front of the square are located some houses that maintain the typical architecture of Merida, one-story houses, elongated, with protruding windows, influenced by the Spanish colonial style.
Al llegar a la plaza, mi hijo, estaba emocionado, porque al igual que a mí, le encanta disfrutar de estos espacios al aire libre. La Plaza es pequeña, pero es muy bonita, está rodeada de mucha vegetación, note que algunos de sus árboles, fueron cortados, imagino, que eran árboles muy antiguos, que representaban algún riesgo de caerse. Pero aún, quedan algunos, para regalarnos su sombra y llenarnos de frescura, cada vez que la brisa, mueva sus hojas.
Es una plaza bastante sencilla, con algunas bancas en hierro forjado muy cómodas, ideal para conversar un rato, leer o descansar. Al frente de la plaza, están situadas algunas viviendas que mantienen la típica arquitectura de Mérida, casas de una planta, alargadas, con ventanas sobresalientes, influenciadas por el estilo colonial español.

Unlike other sites, here we do not find any sculpture of a hero of independence, here the protagonist is this beautiful obelisk, the only one in Merida, which pays homage to the unknown soldiers, to those anonymous heroes. This monument is, in itself, a marvelous work, which invites us to look up to the sky and simply give thanks. I love how its tip seems to reach the sky, forming a beautiful contrast with its intense blue.
The obelisk is supported on a square concrete pedestal as well and on one of its faces, there is a plaque that reads textually the following:
"Monument to the Unknown Soldier of Independence 1930.
Completely rebuilt 1950"
A diferencia de otros sitios, aquí no encontramos ninguna escultura de algún prócer de la independencia, aquí el protagonista es este hermoso obelisco, el único en Mérida, que le rinde homenaje a los soldados desconocidos, a esos héroes anónimos. Este monumento es, en sí misma, una obra maravillosa, que nos invita a mirar al cielo y simplemente agradecer. Me encanta, como su punta, pareciera que alcanzara al cielo, formando un hermoso contraste, con su azul intenso.
El obelisco está apoyado sobre un pedestal cuadrado de concreto también y en una de sus caras, se encuentra una placa que dice textualmente lo siguiente:
“Monumento al Soldado desconocido de la Independencia 1930
Reconstruido totalmente 1950 “

At the end of the square, a beautiful church attracts the eyes, for its wonderful architecture, I really love the facade of this church, I love its symmetry and the visual effect that gives its pointed arches, which make me think that its design was inspired by the neo-Gothic style. It has three naves, which are accessed through beautiful wooden doors, which also culminate in pointed arches. The doors, like the rest of its facade, have several decorative elements in relief, which enhances the beauty of this work.
The central nave culminates with the bell tower. With beautiful and subtle architectural details and above it, there is a sculpture with the image of the virgin. As you can see, its façade is quite a spectacle, which combines very well with the yellow of its walls. It is a pity that I cannot share with you some pictures of its interior, but I remember it as beautiful, maybe I can show them to you in another opportunity.
This historical monument, as far as I can see, is in good condition and quite well preserved for a work built in 1803, according to the information provided by IAM (Institutional Assets and Monuments of Venezuela) on its website, where they also indicate that it was restored in 2001, although I imagine that after this year, they have had to do some maintenance work.
Al fondo de la plaza, una hermosa iglesia atrae las miradas, por su maravillosa arquitectura, realmente adoro la fachada de esta iglesia, me encanta su simetría y ese efecto visual que le otorga sus arcos en ojival, que me hacen pensar, que su diseño fue inspirado en el estilo neogótico. Cuenta con tres naves, a las cuales se accede, a través de hermosas puertas de madera, que culminan también en arcos punteados. Las puertas, al igual que el resto de su fachada, cuenta con varios elementos decorativos en relieve, que realza la belleza de esta obra.
La nave central culmina con el campanario. Con hermosos y sutiles detalles arquitectónicos y sobre él, se sitia una escultura con la imagen de la virgen. Como ven, su fachada es todo un espectáculo, que combina muy bien con el amarillo de sus paredes. Es una lástima que no pueda compartirles algunas fotografías de su interior, pero la recuerdo igual de hermosa, tal vez, pueda mostrárselas en otra oportunidad.
Este monumento histórico, por lo que logre apreciar, se encuentra en buen estado y bastante conservada para ser una obra construida en 1803, según la información que nos da IAM (Institutional Assets and Monuments of Venezuela ) en su página web, donde también indican que fue restaurada en el año 2001, aunque imagino que posterior a este año, han tenido que realizar algunas labores de mantenimiento.

Next to the church, we have the Municipal Cemetery El Espejo, a site with an equally appreciable architecture, what I like about this site, is its main entrance, with beautiful sculptures and a floor, decorated with very striking geometric details. From the outside, we can have a partial view of the site, through a wrought iron trellis with beautiful decorations, like the church, maintains the same style in its doors with pointed arches. Inside the cemetery, there are also several sculptures of great artistic value.
Al lado, de la iglesia, tenemos al Cementerio Municipal El Espejo, un sitio, con una arquitectura igual de apreciable, lo que me gusta de este sitio, es su entrada principal, con hermosas esculturas y un piso, decorado con detalles geométricos muy llamativos. Desde afuera, podemos tener una vista parcial al sitio, a través de un enrejado en hierro forjado con bonitas decoraciones, al igual que la iglesia, mantiene el mismo estilo en sus puertas con los arcos en ojival. Dentro del cementerio, también se encuentran diversas esculturas de gran valor artístico.
Thus, we culminate this small architectural tour, by the area of the Sector The Mirror, in the city of Merida. Undoubtedly, a place you have to visit if you ever find yourself in my city. These places, although they are very simple, have an architectural charm that is worth appreciating, besides, in the background, as always we have the beautiful Sierra Nevada, showing off with its majestic mountains.

Estos lugares, aunque son muy sencillos, tienen un encanto arquitectónico que vale la pena apreciar, además, al fondo, como siempre tenemos la hermosa sierra nevada, luciéndose con sus majestuosas montañas.
