A few days ago, I went out with my family for a walk in the city of Mérida, it was a Sunday and we left home very early, to take advantage of the day, we took the bus that leaves us very close to the Central Quarter of the city, upon arrival , we find a quiet, solitary city, ideal for walking and enjoying the architecture of its streets.
Generally, the center of the city is very active commercially, in these open streets that I am going to show you today, we find a large number of informal vendors, a lot of people and considerable vehicular traffic, but on Sundays the scenario is quite the opposite. so I took the opportunity to take some photos of some iconic sites and I am very happy to share them with all of you today.

Hace algunos días, salí con mi familia a dar un paseo a la ciudad de Mérida, era un domingo y salimos muy temprano de casa, para aprovechar el día, tomamos el autobús que nos deja muy cerca del Casco Central de la ciudad, al llegar, encontramos una ciudad tranquila, solitaria, ideal para caminar y disfrutar de la arquitectura de sus calles.
Generalmente, el centro de la ciudad, es muy activo comercialmente, en estas calles despejadas que hoy les voy a mostrar, encontramos una gran cantidad de vendedores informales, mucha gente y un tráfico vehicular considerable, pero los domingos el escenario es todo lo contrario, así que aproveche para tomar algunas fotos de algunos sitios icónicos y estoy muy feliz de compartirlas con todos ustedes el día de hoy.

One of the things I love most about Mérida is its architecture and its different contrasts. Walking through some of its streets makes you think of our ancestors, in colonial times. The central town of Mérida is clearly marked by the influence of the Spanish colonial style, some buildings, with interesting facades, full of heritage value, make a walk an architectural delight.
We start the tour from Av. 4 at the height of Calle 25, here we find various commercial sites, among them I can highlight the Agua Blanca building, better known as El Tijerazo, it is a very popular department store, with a trapezoidal floor plan , quite interesting. That yellow color of its facade gives it a lot of warmth and makes it very striking. I have entered several times and internally it is a very spacious place, quite elegant, you can spend a few hours here without deciding what to buy because they offer a lot of variety.
Una de las cosas que más amo de Mérida es su arquitectura y sus distintos contrastes, caminar por algunas de sus calles te hace pensar en nuestros antepasados, en la época colonial. El casco central de Mérida, está claramente marcado por la influencia del estilo colonial español, algunos edificios, con fachadas interesantes, llenos de valor patrimonial, hacen que una caminata se convierta en todo un deleite arquitectónico.
Comenzamos el recorrido desde la Av. 4 a la altura de la calle 25, aquí encontramos diversos sitios comerciales, entre ellos puedo destacar el edificio Agua Blanca, mejor conocido como el Tijerazo, es una tienda por departamentos, muy popular, con una planta trapezoidal, bastante interesante. Ese color amarillo de su fachada, le da mucha calidez y lo hace muy llamativo. He entrado varias veces e internamente es un lugar muy amplio, bastante elegante, puedes pasar algunas horas aquí sin decidirte que comprar porque ofrecen mucha variedad.
We continue walking and find some buildings of great architectural value, including the University of Los Andes Rector's Office, I have already told you about this beautiful building that also has great sentimental value for me, in front we have a shopping center, made up of a long corridor with arches, its interior is in good condition, but in this corridor I managed to notice a lot of wear on its lining and signs of humidity.
Seguimos caminando y encontramos algunos edificios de gran valor arquitectónicos, entre ellos el Rectorado de la Universidad de los Andes, ya les he hablado acerca de este hermoso edificio que además tiene un gran valor sentimental para mí, al frente tenemos un centro comercial, compuesto por un pasillo alargado con arcos, su interior está en buen estado, pero en este corredor logre notar mucho desgaste en su revestimiento y señales de humedad.
A couple of meters later we arrive at 23rd Street, here we have Plaza Bolívar and around it, we find various buildings with architectural details of great value, such as the Casa Juan Félix Sánchez, it is a two-story house, with a series of arched doors and windows, some wrought iron balconies and concrete parapets around its perimeter. At its main door we find some decorative pillars with beautiful details. It is a beautiful house, dedicated to culture and art. I really like this house.
Un par de metros después llegamos a la calle 23, aquí tenemos la Plaza Bolívar y alrededor de ella, encontramos diversos edificios con detalles arquitectónicos de gran valor, como la Casa Juan Félix Sánchez, se trata de una casa de dos plantas, con una serie de puertas y ventanas en arco, algunos balcones de hierro forjado y antepechos de concreto en todo su perímetro. En su puerta principal encontramos algunos pilares decorativos con lindos detalles. Es una casa hermosa, dedicada a la cultura y el arte. Me gusta mucho esta casa.
Very close to it we have the El Fortín Shopping Center, it is also an old building, with beautiful arch details on its facades, in this building is one of the most important Libraries in Mérida, called Febres Cordero, perhaps, at some point , have the opportunity to visit it again. On the lower floor we find some clothing stores.
Muy cerca de ella tenemos el Centro Comercial El Fortín, también es un edificio antiguo, con hermosos detalles en arco en sus fachadas, en este edificio se encuentra una de las Bibliotecas más importantes de Mérida, llamada Febres Cordero, tal vez, en algún momento, tenga la oportunidad de visitarla de nuevo. En la planta inferior encontramos algunos almacenes de Ropa.
We continue walking and enjoying the colonial architecture that characterizes these streets, long houses with outstanding, striking windows, wooden doors and tile roofs. Those who have read my previous publications know that I am a lover of colonial architecture, of all those buildings that tell us about history and I love knowing that despite the years they are still standing.
As you can see in the photos, many of these buildings need restoration on their façades, especially their cladding, a bit of corrective maintenance, it would do them a lot of good and they would give them life again. However, in general terms, they are well preserved and I hope they can take actions to extend their useful life and recover the visual harmony of the city.
Seguimos caminando y disfrutando de la arquitectura colonial que caracteriza estas calles, casas alargadas con ventanas sobresalientes, llamativas, puertas en madera y techos de teja. Quienes han leído mis publicaciones anteriores, saben que soy amante de la arquitectura colonial, de todas esas edificaciones que nos hablan de historia y me encanta saber que a pesar de los años aún se encuentren de pie.
Como pueden ver, en las fotos, muchas de estas edificaciones, necesitan una restauración en sus fachadas, especialmente en sus revestimientos, un poco de mantenimiento correctivo, les vendría muy bien y les darían vida de nuevo. Sin embargo, en términos generales, están bien conservadas y espero puedan tomar acciones para extender su vida útil y recuperar la armonía visual de la ciudad.
We kept walking until we reached 18th Street. After going up seven blocks we were already a bit tired, so we decided to return but along 4th Avenue. Here we found a church that I didn't know. It is called the: Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Its main façade is narrow, but it is quite long, since it occupies approximately half a block. I really liked the details of the iron door. I also loved the rear dome, which sticks out and is visible from afar. The façade of this church has several very beautiful relief decorations. It's a bit neglected, I don't know if it's working, but I loved making this little discovery.
Seguimos caminando hasta llegar a la calle 18, después de subir siete cuadras ya estábamos un poco cansados, así que decidimos retornar pero por la Av. 4. Aquí nos encontramos con una iglesia que no conocía. Se llama la: Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Su fachada principal es estrecha, pero es bastante larga, ya que ocupa aproximadamente medía cuadra. Me gusto mucho los detalles de la puerta de hierro. También me encanto la cúpula posterior, la cual sobresale y es visible desde lejos. La fachada de esta iglesia posee varias decoraciones en relieve muy hermosas. Está un poco descuidada, desconozco si este en funcionamiento, pero me encanto hacer este pequeño descubrimiento.
After this nice tour, we took our son to the park and came back home. This is just a part of the architecture that you can find in this city, little by little, I will continue showing you a little more of the city of the Knights, as they usually say to Mérida and its beautiful architecture.
Después de este bonito recorrido, llevamos a nuestro hijo al parque y volvimos a casa. Esto es solo una parte de la arquitectura que puedes encontrar en esta ciudad, poco a poco, seguiré mostrándoles un poco más de la ciudad de los Caballeros, como suelen decirle a Mérida y su bonita arquitectura.
