Hello everyone
How are you today ? I hope and pray, we are all always given health and also happiness in living this life. I am very happy, finally given the time and opportunity to be able to participate and contribute again to the Architecture+Design Community. As usual, I will return to share stories about my experiences and impressions when visiting cafes, restaurants or coffee shops that have interesting designs and architectures to discuss. So, what will I discuss this time? keep watching my post below.
Bico Dante Coffee
Last weekend, I visited a coffee shop in Medan City. The coffee shop that I like is Bico Dante Coffee which is located at Ayahanda Street no. 80, Sei Putih Tengah – Medan Petisah District, Medan City. The location of this cafe is not far from where I live. I got a recommendation for this place from one of the well-known social media influencers in Medan City. So, from that content, I felt interested in coming to Bico Dante.
I came to Bico Dante in the late afternoon. We will not be difficult to find this place, apart from the help of Google maps, we will see a stone fence design with a large and striking "Bico Dante" logo. In my opinion, this design and architecture is very inspiring and cool, because it can be used as a media for promotion and advertisement but is free from regional advertisement tax.
Bico Dante is a café that combines several design concepts in one place. Bico Dante Coffee benefits because it has a very large area with a large core building. I think it will be interesting if I invite my friends to see each area one by one. I will discuss the design and architecture of Bico Dante from three points of view, namely the front, the indoor or main building, and the side or rear.
Front of Bico Dante
From the front of this café, we will see a café with a garden café concept. We will find it difficult to count how many pots and plants are used to give the impression of garden vibes in this café. To be honest, I really like the atmosphere and vibes of a garden café like this. Moreover, Medan City is one of the cities in Indonesia that has hot weather, and tends to be arid. The existence of a garden café like this can help reduce the fatigue of this city.
The garden café concept at the front is very well made. Bico Dante also designed an area at the front close to the entrance. One spot area made using a box design with an iron arrangement. This area is a place for vines and makes it look very pretty and green. Apart from that, it also makes the Bico Dante area look shadier.
Apart from that, I feel that Bico Dante also got the homey café concept, especially for the outdoor area at the front of this café. Why is it like that ? If friends see the photo above, we will get vibes like being in the yard of our grandmother's house. We see from the brick floor, then the stone fence that surrounds this area feels very classic but also calming. These outdoor space design conditions are perfect for Bico Dante. For information, the house of Bico Dante is an old house, similar to the houses of the rich in the 60's.
This cafe also chose wooden furniture for the outdoor part of this space, which makes the cafe feel even more homey. The selected wooden furniture also uses the classic furniture style that we often encounter in the living room of Indonesian homes. If you look at the arrangement of benches and tables, the outdoor space area at the front is definitely often used for group or communal visitors who come with more than four people.
If we pay attention, the wooden tables and chairs in Bico Dante's outdoor space look shabby and dull. In my opinion, this is because wooden furniture will be damaged more quickly if it is used in outdoor areas where the weather changes, such as heat and rain. The use of wood furniture for outdoor areas in cafes or restaurants, is very rare for me to find in the cafes I have visited in my city. I think Bico Dante is very brave in making furniture concepts like this, because I feel the maintenance costs are not cheap either.
Core Building from Bico Dante – Indoor Space
Bico Dante also has a building like a house that is used as an indoor space for visitors. If you look at the front, this café still maintains the original structure and architecture of this classic house. We can see from the structure of the roof of the house that still uses tiles made of clay. This clay tile gives a traditional and classic impression to this building. If you look at the condition of the tile which is mossy and faded in color, maybe this tile still uses the original structure.
The interior of this building caught my attention, if from the front one can see the building is still maintained in a classic and traditional style. On the inside of this building, we will see a radical design and architecture. It seems that the architecture or interior design of this café has changed the interior style and interior. One of them, by making lots of new windows and vents. Bico Dante does not have an indoor space with air conditioning, so indoor buildings must have good air circulation so that visitors do not overheat.
If I look at the roof of this house, it seems that Bico Dante made repairs by replacing the wooden foundation for the roof of the house. I feel the design looks newer and also the wood looks bigger. I think this is also unique, changing the roof foundation architecture but still retaining the tiled roofs of the old buildings. Apparently, it's a very troublesome construction work.
Bico Dante Coffee chooses a classic and retro interior style. We can see from the various design and interior ornaments of this space. One of them, the selection of furniture used for this room. I saw some classic sofas that were similar to the sofas in my house when I was a kid.
Apart from that, we will also see classic radio, and also tube televisions which are displayed in several corners of the room. There is also a Honda C70 motorbike, one of the legendary Honda motorbikes which is currently a classic motorbike that is sought after by many motorbike collectors and is very expensive. I also saw ontel bicycles which were the hallmark of public transportation in the past.
Side and Back of Bico Dante
Lastly, I invite my friends to see Bico Dante's favorite architectural and design spots. I don't know where the inspiration and ideas for this café come from, so that it combines two landmarks from two different countries. At the back of this café, we will see a unique and fresh café area. The combination of stone and plant designs makes this café even more beautiful. Apart from that, I also like the selection of furniture for this area. Tables and chairs made of wood with a classic design make every visitor feel at home sitting here.
Plus, in the corner. We will find a mini size replica of the famous Effiel Tower. Initially, I thought this design and concept was very tacky. Why do you have to make a cafe like this? but after seeing and thinking, I remember a quote from Seth Godin “A little more is better than a little better” and it seems that Bico Dante fits this quote perfectly.
Of course, the design concept of the Effiel Tower is not made for people who have already seen the Effiel Tower. However, this design has segments for local people who want to take pictures with different backgrounds. Considering that the distance from Medan City, Indonesia to Paris, France is around 10,000 km and it is very expensive to go there, maybe coming to this café can be a solace.
Still not enough with the replica of the Effiel Tower, Bico Dante made a building behind the design and architectural style of Santorini. I cannot discuss the inside of this Santorini-style building, because this place is a pub that is only open at night. However, to be honest I really like the concept and design of the building.
As befits the design of the building which is influenced by the architectural style of Santorini. The dominance of white and a little blue list is the main attraction of this building. In addition, the building contour design patterns are designed in a natural style that displays natural wall contours. So, this Santorini style building is very eye-catching and many people take pictures around this area.
One post this time seems very long and I hope friends get inspiration and information from this post. See you in my other posts.
