I am very happy, to finally be given the time and opportunity to participate again in the Architecture+Design Community to share stories about my experiences regarding the design and architecture of a place or building that I visited. So, keep on reading my post below.
As you know, one of the places that I often discuss is cafes, coffee shops or restaurants. These are the places I visit the most and are my way of entertaining myself. I really like to eat good food and also like to enjoy the moment in a coffee shop. I always find something new and I can share it with everyone on this platform. Like a local restaurant that I just visited some time ago, namely Warung Lawas Sunggal.
Warung Lawas Sunggal Restaurant
Warung Lawas Sunggal is one of the local restaurants in my city. This restaurant is located at Sunggal Street no. 345 C Medan Sunggal District – Medan City. For information, Medan Sunggal District is one of the suburban and marginal districts in Medan City. This district area experienced slower economic growth, but along with the high price of land in downtown Medan City. The suburban district area is experiencing growth and development.
It will be very easy for us to find this restaurant. This local restaurant is beside a new elite and luxury housing complex in Sunggal District. In addition, the building of this restaurant is very quirky and will attract the attention of everyone who passes this way. From the front, we will see a small billboard with the words "Warung LAwas" on a white background.
I want to explain that there is a difference in meaning between "warung" and "restaurant". We can interpret the word "warung" as a place to eat that is cheap, and can be accepted by all groups without feeling shy. Meanwhile, the word "Lawas" can be interpreted as old school or retro. We can conclude that Warung Lawas Sunggal is a local restaurant with a traditional and old-fashioned concept.
The front gate or entry gate of Warung Lawas Sunggal resembles a traditional Javanese pavilion. The shape feels very cultured and gives us a vintage feel. The front fence is also decorated with traditional wooden window sills that look weathered. Several old movie posters and old advertising posters decorate the front of this restaurant.
Architectural and Interior Design Ground Floor
Warung Lawas Sunggal uses a two-story building with wooden architecture and traditional Indonesian designs. This is what strengthens the identity and concept that this local restaurant wants to build. Even this restaurant building looks magnificent, like a palace of the kings in the past era. Because there are so many interesting things, I'll talk about the ground floor of this building first.
The ground floor building uses a semi-outdoor concept, meaning that there is no wall separating the main building and the garden of this restaurant. When entering, we will see three old Vespa motorbikes on display in front of this restaurant. This old Vespa is rusty with the back of the Vespa like there is a trunk. Just imagine, an old and rusty Vespa can be an interior ornament for the right place. That's the importance of knowing design concepts and architecture.
We will also see various old items that will surprise us and even fascinate us. I felt like I was walking into an antique museum. Just imagine, we can see various plates from ancient times with traditional models and motifs. In fact, some of the plates on display also remind me of my childhood. Not to mention, traditional lanterns or chandeliers with various models and shapes. Everything is neatly displayed, maintained and cleaned very well.
Besides that, I saw a cupboard filled with all kinds of old irons. In the past, when there was no electricity. People iron with irons that use coals as the heat source. Besides being hot and dangerous, these irons are also heavy. In addition, a collection of vintage radios, televisions and telephones also attracts the attention of visitors who come. We can also find a collection of cigarettes and vintage suitcases in this restaurant. I think, the owner of this restaurant wanted to create not only a vintage concept but also someone who loves and collects antiques.
On the ground floor of Warung Lawas Sunggal, it uses wooden furniture in a classic style. This wooden furniture is designed to give the impression of comfort like being in the front room of our grandmother's house. We can still find some of these tables and chairs in Indonesian homes, especially in rural homes.
Interior Design and Architecture on the Second Floor
Next, I invite you to see the second floor of this restaurant. When going up to the second floor, we will pass a staircase which turns out to also get a touch of classic and vintage interior.
I can't imagine, as we pass through these stairs we will see dozens of old magazines and newspapers and photographs of historical events in Indonesia. Some of those on display were also newspapers with the most electrifying headlines of their time. I feel like I'm going through a time portal when I go through these stairs.
On the second floor of Warung Lawas Sunggal, we will find a very different interior design and vibe from the ground floor. On the second floor, this restaurant maximizes all wooden architecture such as walls and foundations of this building. This wooden house gives us a natural impression. Apart from that, the interior of the second floor feels very artistic and full of art. I felt like I was in the living room of a Malay royal palace in Indonesia.
On the wall, we will see many paintings that are artistically used as the interior of this room. I myself feel, these paintings provide a magical addition to people who choose to sit here. Apart from that, if we pay attention to the selection of furniture in this room, it is also very good.
Warung Lawas Sunggal chose furniture made from wood with a classic design style. Each table uses six wooden chairs, so this room on the second floor is perfect for eating with family and building an intimate atmosphere. Wooden furniture also gives an elegant impression to everyone who uses it. We will also see chandeliers with classic designs that are part of this building.
There is one more thing that caught my attention. I really pay attention to the motifs of floor tiles or ceramics used on the second floor of this restaurant. If we pay attention, the floor design is very different from today's modern building floor designs. I thought it would be very difficult to find ceramic motifs like this. Because of that, I have to appreciate the person who designed this Warung Lawas with totality in accordance with the concept he wanted to show.
Lastly, I invite you to see the design and architecture of the balcony on the second floor of this restaurant. The balcony on the second floor of Warung Lawas Sunggal also features a design and architecture that is no less than the other parts of the building.
On this balcony, wooden ornaments and architecture are still the design axis of this area. In addition, several wood carvings with ethnic and traditional nuances are a very charming interior treat for everyone who sees this second floor balcony.
The choice of furniture also still uses wood-based furniture. However, the table used on the second floor balcony uses a round table with four wooden chairs. As I've said before, round tables are designed to give a more intimate impression without the impression of hierarchy to everyone sitting there. Okay, maybe that's all I can discuss this time.
