Hello hive friends, it's been a while since I've written. I have been busy with things at home and work. I live in the outskirts of a city that seems cosmopolitan but the truth is small and with modest buildings that mostly do not exceed three floors. Pinar del Rio is the westernmost province of Cuba. I don't walk much in the streets and I don't pay attention to the details of the buildings but these days my wife with her sociocultural nature made me look with more details the facades of our buildings while we were walking with the child.
Most of the houses are old with gabled roofs and colored tiles. Porches stretch up and down the streets, supporting the roof are columns of many types but mostly tall and round. Wide are the corridors where people crowd to take shelter from the sun or rain, walking through the city by the portal of stores, businesses or just homes. The buildings that most catch my attention are the Palacio de computación or former Spanish Colony has a stately appearance, tall columns, facade with many straight lines. Then the hearing place where trials have been held for many years. A tall sober building that seems to be built with blocks of giant stones, it resembles some buildings in Havana.
The Cathedral of San Rosendo in Pinar del Rio is a beautiful church with two towers and a large courtyard with an outdoor amphitheater although it is more modest than others internationally it is really very nice. Also very nice is the Coppelia Ice Cream Parlor, modern construction in its visual appearance, beautiful gardens and a stone wall that rises at the foot of a small lake where you can easily find thousands of little fish. Nearby is the pizzeria La Terrazina with a single level building that being on low ground is lost among the vegetation but very nice to look at because it is in a natural environment of stones, shrubs and other taller and leafy trees.
Next in my interest is the Milanés Theater, a beautiful institution with an important cultural history where we have enjoyed several plays and shows for children. My wife tells me that it was the location for the famous Cuban movie La Bella del Alhambra. Of all the buildings, the one I admire most is the Wachs Palace, a beautiful place built in a pioneering manner in Cuba with the technique of reinforced concrete in the early twentieth century. Its facades are full of marine animals and all that living creature that the designer came up with and inside it has a sculpture of a dinosaur that looks like the real thing. If you visit Pinar del Río do not miss it.
The most modern building in the city is called the 12 floors. Located in the center of the city, it is a reference point for its height not to be missed. It is a sober construction with glass and reinforced concrete. It offers cafeteria, pharmacy and restaurant services. It is also important in our city the University of Pinar del Rio and specifically the monument to the Saíz Brothers that represents the university studies in our city. It has two inclined columns that end with a star-shaped rifle. There is also the rectory building that was built and was the Institute of Secondary Education at the beginning of the 20th century in this city.
The parks are also nice although modest. In them the vegetation and the young people connected with their cell phones stand out. The best known is the Independence Park, then the one of the forest that has several circles and several stages surrounded by trees and with cobblestones on the floor. The Martí Park with a beautiful statue of the Cuban apostle made of marble and wide and spacious stairs. Colón Park, which looks like a promenade, as it stretches for three blocks.
As terminals there are two important ones, the bus terminal where thousands of people pass daily in search of transportation to their destination, a large building with several offices, folder, waiting room, it is a sober construction. The train station is very nice and has a very nice facade. This is more or less my city, I hope you enjoyed the ride, I feel happy when I walk it hand in hand with my son.
