A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit a friend's venture on the corner where Obispo and San Ignacio streets intersect, in Old Havana. The Matty Habana store always surprises me with its beautiful creations, and this time was no exception. However, during my visit, I remembered that I had to buy some medicine for my mother, specifically green or traditional medicine.
One of the sales clerks suggested that I go to a pharmacy located on the next block. I decided to follow her recommendation and headed there. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a historical relic of green medicine, the Taquechel Pharmacy. Despite having passed by this place countless times, I had never noticed its existence.

Hace unos días tuve la oportunidad de visitar el emprendimiento de una amiga en la esquina donde se cruzan las calles Obispo y San Ignacio, en La Habana Vieja. La tienda Matty Habana siempre me sorprende con sus hermosas creaciones, y esta vez no fue la excepción. Sin embargo, durante mi visita, recordé que tenía que comprar alguna medicina para mi madre, concretamente medicina verde o tradicional.
Una de las dependientas me sugirió que fuera a una farmacia situada en la manzana de al lado. Decidí seguir su recomendación y me dirigí allí. Cuando llegué, me sorprendió gratamente descubrir una reliquia histórica de la medicina verde, la Farmacia Taquechel. A pesar de haber pasado innumerables veces por delante de este lugar, nunca me había percatado de su existencia.
The pharmacy is located at 155 Obispo, between San Ignacio and Mercader. As soon as I entered, I was amazed by the large polished wooden shelves that housed a large number of porcelain containers, as if time had stopped in past centuries. This small but beautiful pharmacy is also a museum. There were numerous pieces from old pharmacies, but at the same time it functioned as a modern-day pharmacy, offering natural and homeopathic medicines, as in the early days of medicine, which are often more effective than the modern medicines we consume.
La farmacia se encuentra en Obispo 155, entre San Ignacio y Mercader. Apenas entré, me sorprendieron las grandes estanterías de madera pulida que albergaban una gran cantidad de recipientes de porcelana, como si el tiempo se hubiera detenido en siglos pasados. Esta pequeña pero hermosa farmacia es además un museo. Había numerosas piezas de farmacias antiguas, pero al mismo tiempo funcionaba como una farmacia actual, que ofrecía medicamentos naturales y homeopáticos, como en los primeros tiempos de la medicina, que a menudo son más eficaces que los medicamentos modernos que consumimos.
The pharmacy's furnishings, made of beautifully polished and varnished wood, were simply stunning. Every detail was impeccably arranged and organized. Upon entering, I felt as if I had stepped back into the 19th century. It was a real marvel. The chandeliers hanging from the ceiling were beautiful, transmitting a dim light that added a particular charm to the pharmacy.
El mobiliario de la farmacia, de madera preciosa pulida y barnizada, era sencillamente impresionante. Cada detalle estaba impecablemente dispuesto y organizado. Al entrar, me sentí como si hubiera retrocedido hasta el siglo XIX. Era una auténtica maravilla. Las lámparas que pendian del techo eran preciosas, trasmitian una luz tenue que le añadía un encanto particular a la farmacia.
I was struck by the fact that they even kept the old cash box to charge for the services they provide there, a real relic. As I admired every corner of the place, I realized that I had come in looking for medicines. The clerk was very kind and explained to me that in two days they would receive more supplies, since lately they had experienced a large influx of customers. Although I could appreciate the wide variety of medicines they offered, they did not have exactly what I needed at that moment.
Me llamó la atención que incluso conservaran la antigua caja para cobrar el servicios que brindan alli, una auténtica reliquia. Mientras admiraba cada rincón del lugar, me di cuenta de que había entrado buscando medicinas. La dependiente fue muy amable y me explicó que en dos días recibirían más suministros, ya que últimamente habían experimentado una gran afluencia de clientes. Aunque pude apreciar la gran variedad de medicamentos que ofrecían, no tenían exactamente lo que yo necesitaba en ese momento.
Despite this, I couldn't resist enjoying the beauty of the period furniture and utensils. They even had a vintage water purifier. That place was much more than a museum, it was a place full of magic and surprises. I will definitely have to come back another time to further explore this special place, although I have already solved my mother's medications.
A pesar de ello, no pude resistirme a disfrutar de la belleza de los muebles y utensilios de época. Incluso tenían una purificador de agua de la época. Aquel lugar era mucho más que un museo, era un lugar lleno de magia y sorpresas. Definitivamente tendré que volver en otra ocasión para explorar más a fondo este lugar tan especial, aunque ya le he resuelto los medicamentos a mi madre.
Later when I arrived I made some consultations and learned that in this place in the nineteenth century there was an apothecary founded by Dr. Francisco Taquechel Mirabal in 1898, hence its name, where he marketed the type of medicine that is offered today. All this was recovered by the Office of the Historian in 1996, bringing to our days this useful and beneficial historical and scientific legacy.
Posteriormente al llegar hice algunas consultas y me enteré que en este lugar en el siglo XIX existió una botica fundada por el Dr. Francisco Taquechel Mirabal en 1898, de ahí su nombre, donde comercializó el tipo de medicina que hoy se ofrece. Todo ello fue recuperado por la Oficina del Historiador en 1996, trayendo hasta nuestros días este útil y beneficioso legado histórico y científico.
