Good friends of this wonderful community of Architecture + Design, every time I make a post for this community I get very excited because I always have to study and document well the origin of everything I publish, studying and discovering new things excites me a lot.
Today I am going to talk about the monument to Los Bomberos that is located a few meters from the entrance of the Havana Cemetery. It is a monument that is about 20 meters high, it draws a lot of attention because it stands out for its height and beauty. It was made by the architect Julio Martínez Zapata and the sculptor Agustín Querol Subirats, both Spanish.

Hoy les voy a hablar del monumento a Los Bomberos que se encuentra a pocos metros de la entrada del Cementerio de La Habana. Es un monumento que tiene unos 20 metros de altura, llama mucho la atención porque se destaca por su altura y belleza. Fue realizada por el arquitecto Julio Martínez Zapata y el escultor Agustín Querol Subirats, ambos españoles.
This monument was erected in commemoration of 25 young firefighters, who died on May 17, 1890, due to a fire that occurred in Havana on Mercader and Lamparilla streets in the Juan Isasi hardware store, while trying to put out the flames of the local fire, Two large explosions occurred because the owner had a large amount of dynamite stored and did not declare it to evade taxes, and also did not notify the firefighters about it, causing the death of 38 people. Este monumento fue erigido en conmemoración a 25 jóvenes bomberos, fallecidos el 17 de mayo de 1890, a causa de un incendio ocurrido en La Habana en las calles Mercader y Lamparilla en la ferretería Juan Isasi, al intentar apagar las llamas del incendio local. Ocurrieron dos grandes explosiones porque el propietario tenía guardada una gran cantidad de dinamita y no la declaró para evadir impuestos y no avisó a los bomberos al respecto, provocando la muerte de 38 personas. The monument was inaugurated on July 24, 1897, seven years after the fateful event. It was made for the 25 firefighters who were buried after the explosion, it is of singular beauty, made of marble. The monument is surrounded by cast iron walls and chains, it is a singular and exquisite work in iron and marble.

Fue realizado para los 25 bomberos que quedaron sepultados tras la explosión, es de singular belleza, realizado en mármol. El monumento está rodeado por muros y cadenas de hierro fundido, es un trabajo singular y exquisito en hierro y mármol.
It has a base that resembles a sarcophagus, at each end there are four sculptures of female figures that represent abnegation, pain, heroism and martyrdom, all made with meticulous detail.
Tiene una base que asemeja un sarcófago, en cada extremo hay cuatro esculturas de figuras femeninas que representan la abnegación, el dolor, el heroísmo y el martirio, todas realizadas con minucioso detalle.
It exhibits the faces of the deceased firefighters carved in marble, plus the face of the sculptor because the photo of one of them was missing and the sculptor captured his image.
Exhibe los rostros de los bomberos fallecidos tallados en mármol, más el rostro del escultor porque faltaba la foto de uno de ellos y el escultor plasmó su imagen.
In the center there is a tombstone in which the following is reflected: "The people of Havana mourn their noble sacrifice, bless their heroic self-sacrifice and gratefully dedicate this monument to them to keep their ashes and perpetuate their memory."
Al centro tiene una lápida en la que se plasma lo siguiente «El pueblo de La Habana llora su noble sacrificio, bendice su abnegación heroica y agradecido les dedica este monumento para guardar sus cenizas y perpetuar su memoria.»
Next, it has a large ornate column where the Coat of Arms of Spain, the fire department, the Public Order and the Navy are engraved.
A continuación, tiene una gran columna ornamentada donde están grabados el Escudo de España, los Bomberos, el Orden Público y la Marina de Guerra.
In the upper part it has a beautiful sculpture of the Angel of Faith blindfolded, those large wings that it has can be seen from anywhere in the cemetery. In his arms is a deceased firefighter, in the background he has a cross and his left arm is raised to the sky as if asking for justice.
En la parte alta tiene una bella escultura del ángel de la Fe con los ojos vendados, esas grandes alas que posee se observan de cualquier punto del cementerio. Entre sus brazos un bombero fallecido, al fondo tiene una cruz y su brazo izquierdo se alza al cielo como si pidiera justicia.
It is a monument that contains a lot of pain and history, but you cannot stop admiring the beauty of the sculptural complex, it shows that it was made taking care of every detail, a great job.
Es un monumento que encierra mucho dolor e historia, pero no se puede dejar de admirar la belleza del complejo escultórico se denota que fue realizado cuidando cada detalle, un gran trabajo.
In the back there is a niche where the remains of fallen firefighters in a heroic act are deposited to this day.
En la parte trasera hay un nicho donde se depositan los restos de los bomberos caídos en un acto heroico hasta el día de hoy.
