Hello friend lover of design and architecture, a few months ago I made a trip to the plains of my country, in Venezuela, I went to visit part of my family who live in the countryside, in large tracts of land and as the children grow up and decide to get married they get down to work and make their own home, these constructions are handmade and their technique has been learned from generation to generation.
Hola amigo amante del diseño y la arquitectura, hace unos meses realicé un viaje a los llanos de mi país, en Venezuela, fui a visitar parte de mi familia que viven en el campo, en grandes extensiones de terreno y en la medida que los hijos van creciendo y deciden casarse ponen manos a la obra y realizan su propia vivienda, estas construcciones son hechas a mano y su técnica se ha aprendido de generación en generación.
Construction materials
They are called mud houses, because it is their main raw material. They are small houses built with adobe which is a mass of mud and molded straw that is put to dry in the sun, this mass is applied on a bahareque which is a series of reeds and sticks woven together, also its columns are wooden trunks joined with iron nails, In ancient times their roofs were also woven moriche palm or any other element of the environment, currently they use zinc sheets as seen in the photos, their floors are made of compacted earth that settles from so much stepping and applying water, they are made frames for windows and doors and in it they have fabric or wire mesh to protect from mosquitoes and pests.
I have always been struck by this type of housing because they seem to resist the weather conditions, no matter how strong the sun, the rain, the breeze, they remain intact for many years, they are as resistant as any house built with other materials, they last many years without any maintenance, they usually measure a few meters and look like small square boxes, but inside they have two or three divided spaces that are the rooms or bedrooms and a living room-kitchen. This little house that I am showing you belongs to one of my cousin's sons, but he was not at home to see it inside, so I could only take pictures of it from the outside.
Materiales de construcción
Se les llama casa de barro, porque es su principal materia prima. Son casitas construidas con adobe que es una masa de barro y paja moldeada que se pone a secar al sol, esta masa se aplica sobre un bahareque que es una serie de cañas y palos tejidos entre sí, además sus columnas son troncos de madera unidos con clavos de hierro, en la antigüedad sus techos eran de palma de moriche también tejido o de cualquier otro elemento del medio ambiente, actualmente usan láminas de zinc como se aprecia en las fotos, sus pisos son de tierra compacta que se asienta de tanto pisar y aplicar agua, se les hacen marcos para ventanas y puertas y en ella poseen tela o malla metálica protectora de zancudos y plagas.
Siempre me ha llamado la atención este tipo de viviendas porque parecen resistir las condiciones del clima, por más fuerte que sea el sol, la lluvia, la brisa se mantienen intactas por muchos años, son tan resistentes como cualquier casa construida con otros materiales, duran muchos años sin ningún mantenimiento, por lo general miden pocos metros y parecen pequeñas cajas cuadradas, pero por dentro tienen dos o tres espacios dividas que son los cuartos o habitaciones y una sala-cocina. Esta casita que muestro es de uno de los hijos de mi primo, pero no se encontraba en casa para verla por dentro, así que solo pude sacarle fotos por fuera.
Family history
There are other more modern houses in these areas, built with blocks and their walls are friezed, even have cable TV and have some amenities such as internet, but today I wanted to highlight this house built with materials as natural and rudimentary as the mud house of my cousin, unfortunately the owner of this house was not home I would have liked to take pictures inside. This house represents indigenous architecture because its origins date back to pre-Columbian times, being the origin of my Indian and peasant ancestors of these areas.
My mom tells me that when she was little she lived in one of these little houses and had a pet picure which is a kind of giant rodent with claws, this pet would go to the field during the day and would get lost among the trees and bushes and at night it would arrive when they were already lying down like the door and everything was closed, there would be a hole in the walls and it would jump into my mom's chinchorro, which is a kind of hammock. My grandmother always had to cover those holes that my mom's pet made, these houses are not shielded against loving pets, ha, ha, ha, ha.
Historia familiar
Hay otras casas más modernas en estas zonas, construidas con bloques y sus paredes estas frisadas, incluso cuentan con televisión por cable y tiene algunas comodidades como internet, pero hoy quise destacar esta vivienda construida con materiales tan naturales y rudimentarios como la casa de barro de mi primo, lamentablemente el dueño de esta casa no estaba me hubiese gustado tomarle fotos en su interior. Esta casa representa la arquitectura indígena porque sus orígenes se remontan a la época precolombina, siendo el origen de mis ancestros indios y campesinos de estas zonas.
Mi mamá me cuenta que cuando ella estaba pequeña vivía en una de estas casitas y tenía un picure de mascota que es un tipo de roedor gigante con garras, esta mascota de día se iba al campo y se perdía entre los árboles y matorrales y en las noches llegaba cuando ya estaban acostados como la puerta y todo estaba cerrado, habría un hueco en las paredes y se metía lanzándose en el chinchorro de mi mamá, que es una especie de hamaca. Mi abuela siempre tenía que tapar esos huecos que la mascota de mi mamá hacía, estás casas no están blindadas en contra de mascotas amorosas, ja, ja, ja.
They could not tell me how long they have been making these houses, because it all depends on the people involved in the project, I have never seen how they make these houses or their construction process. Although technology advances and times change, I am sure that these houses will continue to exist with the same process as always, they will never disappear as long as there is land to cultivate, space to raise children and animals, they will continue to be an option for new families. A little mud house built with love to live in harmony with the environment.
No me supieron decir que tiempo se llevan haciendo estas casas, porque todo depende de las personas que se involucran en el proyecto, nunca he visto como hacen esas viviendas ni su proceso de construcción. Aunque la tecnología avance y los tiempos cambien, estoy segura de que estas viviendas seguirán existiendo con el mismo proceso de siempre, nunca desaparecerán mientras exista terreno que cultivar, espacio para criar hijos y animales, seguirán siendo una opción para las nuevas familias. Una casita de barro construida con amor para vivir en armonía con el ambiente.
