The 15th century gate
Hello friends, today we have mercantile architecture
Today I wheat this building that many centuries ago was a post house, where the merchants took shelter to spend the night with their merchandise, to continue their travels at dawn and thus have a stable trade.
Today that no longer exists and we find it almost like the stories in the movies, but we don't have it here in the middle of the city of Vitoria - Basque Country-Spain.
A few years ago it was restored, taking great care that its structure and design remained intact.
Today it is a great restaurant, with spectacular food and an exquisite atmosphere.
But let's see the building.
What gives the building its name El Portalón is precisely that its door, which today remains the same as it was centuries ago.
Here we can appreciate the large gate that opened to enter the wagons.
We appreciate its black wood for the past time and its ironwork of artisan blacksmiths that with their fire obtained the precious nails, we see the small window where they could see if the merchant could spend the night in the premises or they were just robbers.
But let's start with the facade
Sheets of reddish clay are mixed with the mortar to build the facade.
The beams, frames and eaves are made of old black wood which makes the color of the facade stand out more.
The small balconies today with some broken glass have a diamond design, which in those days gave a category to the room.
We have to pass to observe all its architecture and design
We enter the portal and there we appreciate all to greatness
Its pebble floor, placed in the shape of a spike, we can also see the old well where they drew water for animals and people.
On the right hand side as we enter we find the ramp, which has been transformed into a staircase since the carriages stopped rolling around here a long time ago.
Today the stay in the winery has been transformed.
Everything is closed with gates, but that's like when you see a hole in a wall, you have to look, you may still see some treasure.
As I do not understand wines for me it is only beauty and design, but I suppose they will have some broth that has been bottled for many years and will be the envy of many tasters.
I am a curious girl and the camera fits through the bars, what do we see?
Broths enclosed in dark bottles, all well formed and guarded by carved iron bars, forming a gate.
On the left, a rustic table with several bottles to taste the grape broth, also the powder, which on this occasion gives it more mystery.
We go up to the entrance again and we look at the lantern, which today works with electricity but in those days it would be with blubber, surely that of a whale, since here we have been great fishermen of that cetacean.
The few modern details they have are these twin vats, specially set for this pandemic, to set the drinks.
There is also the old cellar on the ground and hidden from outside eyes, now in plain sight with the door open and a glass to protect it.
We went up the stairs.
We have no reserved table, it is too expensive to eat here for us, I hope to eat when I am a whale and have a big bag of hive hehe.
But still we go up the stairs and appreciate the landing, the beams stand out with their blackness and brightness.
Just think about the size, what would the hearth fire look like?
A trail is also perched on the wall, we appreciate the well-sharpened stones.
A pendulum clock has been telling the hours for a long time.
There is also some detail that is not so old, but fits perfectly into the environment.
From here we can no longer pass.
Someday, I might be able to photograph the dining room.
It was restored in 1957 and is currently one of the most renowned restaurants in the city
Vitoria Gasteiz- Basque Country - Spain
listed as a building of historical interest.
