Hello friends in Architecture+Design Community, today I will share information about the architecture and design of the gadang house. Gadang house is the traditional house of the Minangkabau/Padang people. The Minangkabau tribe is a tribe that inhabits the area of West Sumatra. Near my house, namely in the city of Binjai, North Sumatra province, there is a village that is inhabited by the Minangkabau tribe. This village is called Jati Negara. The village of Jatinegara is inhabited by the Minangkabau Tribe who is an overseas tribe originating from West Sumatra. In the village of Jati Negara there is a gadang house which is used as a venue for Minangkabau traditional wedding receptions, Minangkabau traditional meetings and other traditional events.
Based on data sourced from https://id.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumah_Gadang. Gadang house has a unique architecture, namely the existence of a pointed roof that resembles the horns of a buffalo's head. The traditional gadang house has a roof made of palm fiber. But over time, the architecture of the roof of the gadang house is mostly made of zinc. If you are in Indonesia and see the architecture and design of a building like this, then this is Minangkabau architecture. Usually friends find many architectural forms of buildings like this in restaurants. A restaurant that has an architecture and design like a gadang house, it means a Minangkabau restaurant which is famous for its beef rendang.
Typical Minangkabau architecture in the form of buffalo horns on the roof has a characteristic, namely several buffalo horns are placed parallel and some are back to back.
The gadang house which is located near my house is a gadang house with a modern-style building architecture. But still has the characteristics of Minangkabau architecture. On every door there is a carving of a gadang house.
This gadang house consists of 2 floors. On each floor there is a spacious room that functions for Minangkabau traditional events. To enter the second floor, I had to pass a staircase, because this gadang house has a modern style architecture, so the steps are made of cast stone with the floor made of brown ceramic. The handle of the stairs is also made of anti-rust stainless steel.
Oups there seems to be a design on the guardrail that caught my eye, a beautiful gold detail. The gold detail on the stair railings contrasts with the stainless steel handle, giving it a luxurious feel.
Minangkabau-style architecture is clearly visible on the handrails in the form of squares and floral motifs, plus gold details on the flowers that look more beautiful.
The room on the 2nd floor is used as a meeting room, the design of this room is intended as a meeting room and traditional Minangkabau events, therefore the room on the second floor is just an empty room without furniture.
The architecture of this room consists of many windows, because this room is not equipped with air conditioning / AC, there are only a few fans to dissipate the heat in the room, these windows also help air circulation and the windows in this room do not have lattices.
This is an ordinary meeting room with an ordinary architecture too, nothing special in this room. But as soon as I looked up at the ceiling, there were a few designs that caught my eye. Especially the hanging decorations and decorative lights.
One of the characteristics of the gadang house is the decoration which generally has a motif of roots, flowers, leaves, parallelograms and rectangular fields. The decorative motifs of squares and parallelograms are found on the ceiling of the building.
Another architecture that characterizes the rumah gadang is the pillars supporting the building. Building support poles are usually not planted in the ground like buildings in general, but these pillars are built on flat ground. West Sumatra is an earthquake-prone area, therefore the architecture of Rumah Gadang has a characteristic in the form of long pillars that are not easily toppled by earthquake shocks. So that architecture in the form of long pillars can usually be found in gadang houses throughout Indonesia
On the first floor it was only used as a place to store goods, so I turned to the parking lot. The parking lot has a large enough space so that it can fit 10 cars and about 50 motorbikes.
Such is the architecture and design of the gadang house, the traditional house of the Minangkabau tribe in the city of Binjai. Thank you for reading my post
