Hello Architecture+Design Lovers. Today I got an assignment from the principal to attend a meeting related to my work as a teacher. I was assigned to the education office to discuss the implementation of the new curriculum to be applied to junior high schools throughout the Deli Serdang district. The education office is located in the city of Lubukpakam which is the capital of Deli Serdang district. The distance from my house to Lubuk Pakam is about 80 kilometers and because I took the road from the Kota Binjai toll road (where I live) to the Kemiri Toll Road which is in Lubuk Pakam, my journey took about 40 minutes. Deli Serdang Regency is one of the regencies located in North Sumatra. The majority of the population in Deli Serdang district are North Sumatran Malays. So many government buildings that have a typical Malay architecture.
There is one place in the Deli Serdang education office that I always miss when I visit this place, namely the Deli Serdang education office "literacy park". As the name suggests, this literacy park is a building intended for literacy activities. The architecture and design of the literacy park building is a typical Malay architecture. The architecture of the building in this literacy park is called "House Cindai" which is a traditional Malay house in Deli Serdang. When I am in this literacy park, I feel comfortable and calm, this is because the architecture of the building that makes the atmosphere comfortable and also the garden gardens that surround the wooden building seem to blend in with the natural surroundings.
Some of the architectural characteristics of the Malay ethnic building are the shape of the ornaments and the bright colors of the building. I will show the architectural characteristics of the Malay ethnic building starting from the building foundation. Foundation architecture Malay ethnic buildings are generally in the form of supporting pillars made of concrete or cast stone. This aims to avoid flooding that can hit at any time.
Another architecture that is characteristic of Malay ethnic buildings is the stilt house. Generally, the Malays live in houses in the form of stilts, therefore the architecture of the "literacy garden" building in the Deli Serdang education office adopts the architecture of the Malay houses on stilts. The literacy garden building is made of teak wood which is painted in the same color as the wood, which is brown.
Another architectural feature is the minimalist design of the windows. The windows are made of glass but do not leave a Malay characteristic, namely the presence of a wooden window next to the glass window. The shape of the window is a comb window, which is a combination of several pieces of wood designed for ventilation.
In the "literacy park" building there are many ornaments that are identical to the Malays, namely in the form of carvings / sculptures on wood, the carved design that is characteristic of the Malays can be seen in the following photo.
Based on the data I got from: media.neliti.com. rumah-melayu-cindai-model-rumah-panggung.pdf.
This form of ornament is called a "hanging bee" and is always painted in yellow.
Even the design of the yard fence is also identical to the Malay tribe, namely in the form of wooden carvings that are painted in bright colors, generally painted in yellow which depicts the splendor and victory. This form is called "violin trellis"
The door design is a two-door, which is made of wood with a combination of glass.
Another characteristic is the shape of the roof on the front, in the form of an isosceles triangle or Limas which is the hallmark of the "Cindai house" namely the traditional house of the Deli Serdang Malay tribe. The decorations that surround the front roof are always themed "hanging bees" or #floral and fauna motifs".
In front of the "literacy park" building there is a gate made of beautifully carved teak wood. The fence made of teak wood has a figure made of ceramic with a striated pattern and what adds to the beautiful impression is the presence of stairs at the entrance. These steps are made of ceramic. On the left and right of the entrance there is a flower garden that is neatly arranged, thus adding to the beauty of the building.
Behind the building there are several pavilions / resting places. This resting place has a modern minimalist design and is located in the garden behind the main building.
There are several resting places that we can choose to read books, because this literacy park is a vehicle for reading books.
The green flower garden design is combined with a shady resting place, adding to the comfortable impression of this "literacy garden". I also took the time to take a selfie.
Around the building there are also several children's toys, so that children who are starting to learn to read feel at home in this park for a long time.
Government buildings in Indonesia are usually built by taking into account local wisdom in the form of culture and customs that apply in the area. Thus my discussion of the architecture and design of the Deli Serdang Malay traditional house in the literacy park of the Deli Serdang district education office.
Thank you for reading my post.
