Today it was my turn to serve tea, and I came across a simple scene that was perfect for this contest: on the granite table are two cups—one for my mom and one for me—filled with a dark red drink, since it’s hibiscus tea. This scene repeats itself every day, sometimes with more than one cup, but what caught my attention most wasn’t the contents of the cups, but the shadows cast by them.

Since it’s early, the sunlight falls softly on the cups, creating shadows around the cups and saucers that outline their shapes. On the cup closest to me, the shadow is more defined, especially under the handle and along the edge of the saucer, where it is almost perfect. It makes the cup stand out more and appear much larger than the cup in the background. In contrast, the cup in the background has a smaller shadow, almost hidden, as if it were fading away little by little.

Hoy toco servir un té y me encontré con una escena simple, pero que era perfecta para ese concurso: sobre la mesa de granito están dos tazas una para mi mamá y una para mí, llenas de una bebida de color rojo oscuro, ya que es un té de jamaica. Cada día esa escena se repite, a a veces con más taza con una sola, pero lo que más me llamó la atención no fue el contenido de las tazas, sino la sombra que las acompaña.

Al ser temprano la luz del sol cae de forma suave sobre las tazas y eso permite que alrededor de la taza y los platos se forme una sombra, marcando sus contornos. En la taza que está más cerca, la sombra es más definida, sobre todo debajo del asa y en el borde del plato, la cual es casi perfecta. Hace que la taza resalte más y pareciera que fuera mucho más grande que la taza de atrás. En cambio, la taza del fondo tiene una sombra más pequeña, casi oculta, como si se desvaneciera poco a poco.

What’s interesting about all this is how the shadow transforms something so simple into something more striking. Without the shadow, they would simply be two cups on the table—and quite boring. But the shadow adds depth and contrast, creating a scene that’s truly unique.

That’s why these photos are a great example of how sometimes, in everyday objects like cups, there are small details that can change the rhythm and direction of something. Therefore, the shadow allows everything to change, and everything will be as you see it.

Lo interesante de todo eso es como la sombra cambia la percepción de algo tan simple en algo más llamativo. Sin la presencia de la sombra, simplemente serían dos tazas sobre la mesa y muy aburridas. Pero con la sombra le da profundidad, contraste y crea esa escena que es única.

Por eso con estas fotos es un gran ejemplo de que a veces, en lo cotidiano como son las tazas, hay pequeños detalles, que pueden llegar a cambiar el ritmo y el rumbo de algo. Por lo tanto, la sombra permite que todo cambie y todo estará como tú veas las cosas.
