so i was hanging out at that place where shadows walk on water and after watching how they did it i thought i would give it a go. in order to keep my feet dry i thought it best to run at first and see how it went
amazingly it worked. as i was relishing in the thrill of the moment, two teenagers came flying by on their bikes. they were so fast i barely managed to take their photo. i was proud i reacted so swiftly so i immediately called them to show them the image. i was quite surprised and frankly disappointed to see their shadows were so faint. mine was clear enough.
they just laughed and explained "that's because we were going so fast"
"oh, come on, no way!"
"yes, seriously. do you realize that when you travel at the speed of light you don't cast any shadow...?" the blonde guy exclaimed
"WHAT??" i challenged
"think about it." the taller guy interjected "if you are holding a garden hose and quickly slide your hand through the stream of water there is only a slight interruption in the flow. if you could move your hand quick enough the break in the flow would be so short it would be imperceptible.
light and shadows work just like that"
"could i by any chance interest you two in judging a shadow guessing contest?"
i kind of grasped their logic but wasn't overly convinced that these guys were going fast enough on their bikes to make their shadow significantly fainter.
i did need some judges though and these guys obviously knew a thing or two.
"so what's the mystery image?" they asked in unison
"this here" i showed them.
"what's that???" they both exclaimed
"it's a vintage electric bread toaster from the 1930's. back then folks toasted bread on only one side or at least only one side at a time"
"HUH??!!. are you kidding?? how's anybody supposed to guess that?
if you've never even knew they existed how's it possible to guess what it is?" the blonde guy shouted
"what were you thinking? are you trying to keep all the prizes for yourself??"
"no.no" i meekly hesitated " i, uh, i just wanted the contestants to use their imagination..."
"that's crazy," the taller one interrupted. " are all your contests like this?? man we're gonna make sure everybody gets well rewarded this time!"
"this old guy's brain is toast!" added the blonde "why not just take normal photos like everybody else?"
before i could muster a response they determined the results and disappeared in a flash without even casting a shadow.
so here they are
