When the basketball season sets in, the court at the farm gets busy. We are all ballers in our family. was quite the athlete in his time and he infected me with the joy of being part of the game. He inspired me to play basketball at my school as a sophomore, at just 16 years old. I quickly learned to love the game. I tried out for the team and was selected to play on the varsity team, much to my surprise. I was a hustler and rose to the challenge with all the gump I could muster. I had played before on rec leagues but never really considered jumping into a high school league.
I earned my varsity letter by my junior year and was pleased and proud of what I had accomplished considering our team was one of the first teams to play by the male rules of the game. We ran 5 on 5, most girl teams were still dealing with girls' rules, which had 6 players, 2 on defense 2 on offense and 2 rovers, that could cross both lines and run the full court. Seems archaic to me now.
So glad the rules have changed, and both the ladies and gents share the same court rules.
My 11-year-old grandson already has a great handle on the ball and his shadow reflects it.
His little sister is following his example and I am sure she will follow the Jurg tradition.
