Hi all 😊
My second photo is the entry into the Shadow Hunters Contest, round 201 run by .
Photos taken May 2019.
ENTRY⬆️
The shadows you see on the ground are part of The Memorial ACTe building in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe which you can fully see in my first photo.
Guadeloupe is a Caribbean Island and part of the French Antilles.
THE SHADOWS: The structure that casts this shadow on the ground has a meaning. I tell you more about it in this post.
10 May 2015, French President François Hollande opened the building what is part museum and part genealogy research workshop. It is not allowed to take photographs inside the building, so I only have photos from the outside.
It’s a cultural center/museum dedicated to the Memory and History of Slavery Trade and Slavery.
The area is 7.800 m² large and is where a sugar factory was before. It has some permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions.
The building alone is already beautiful to see from a distance. I think the Architectural design is stunning.
When the architects / designers started their design, they were inspired by a ruined factory whose walls were covered with the roots of a large fig tree when they drew the plans of this building. The construction of the Mémorial ACTe began in 2012 and was finished in 2015.
The design was a black box built in granite which was enclosed in the ”aluminium roots of a fig tree”.
The roots…
This is what casts some days beautiful shadows on the ground around the building. You can view them in my photographs while I was walking around it.
The black facade of this “box” is a tribute to the victims of slave trade and slavery. And also symbolizes the memory of millions of captives who died.
Let me show you my photographs while walking around it.
One of the sides… while approaching the building by foot.
The middle part, view from the parking lot we crossed.
Walking towards the entrance.
Left part of the building.
Between the 2 building parts there is an opening… just in time to photograph the ship passing by.
You see everywhere the shadows on the ground.
More shadows… the roots of the fig tree
Back side of the Memorial ACTe. There is a pier you can walk on. View towards the city of Pointe-à-Pitre.
Walking back to the front…
And the end of it.
I want to finish this post with a view from across the water again.
Hope you enjoyed my photographs of this building in Guadeloupe, what casts beautiful shadows on the ground. If you would go one day to the Island of Guadeloupe, do visit this museum. It gives you a look into the history. And it’s architecture is stunning.
Thank you so much for looking, reading and supporting me.🙏
Any questions or comments, let me know. Always happy to help.
Have a great day all 🥰
